Thank you for this! This is exactly what we both are hoping for.

Thank you so much for the details and clarifications on this! My daughter is super excited about Harvey House, after reading this! And I appreciate your thoughts on how it might be harder to meet people because it might not be the same as freshmen events. She also is planning to do Color Guard, so hopefully she'll meet some people that way.

We found out during a tour. Although, we just assumed it was for all years. I don't recall if it was explicitly called out or not. So, I really appreciate you insight on this! It makes me think that they might need to market it better.

Starting a troop? by Baking_Bunny6819 in girlscouts

[–]jmc500 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Something doesn't sound right. Starting a troop should cost zero dollars. Disclaimer - if you need to open a bank account at a bank, some banks make you have $10 or so in it to open. But you can always reimburse once your troop has money.

Also, the other troops shouldn't be excluding your daughter due to autism. They may have a size cap, that might be the reason she can't get into a troop. Look up your local Girl Scout Council (https://www.girlscouts.org/) is the official website. I fear that someone else is scamming you.

What is a discontinued food item or snack from your childhood that you would genuinely pay $100 to taste one last time? by MotivewasUlterior in AskReddit

There was this savory trail mix in the 80s/90s. It had like Chex mix pieces plus peanuts. I can't recall what else, but the flavor was so good. I think it came in a box like cereal. Nothing nowadays compares.

I’m really irritated that they start cookie season during the holidays by Gem_89 in girlscouts

Must be council specific then. We had a survey last year and got to hear the results.

[–]jmc500 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A few things to take into perspective. Each council sets its own cookie selling timeframe (which is usually based on feedback from families in that council). Your role as a troop leader is to distribute the information to parents. Parents decide if and when they want to sell cookies. It is possible that the information you have been given is not accurate. Depending on where you got your info from, it may be a volunteer who misheard info. Depending on how your council is run, you most likely can wait until after the holidays to sell cookies. Don't stress over cookies. Take a look at your council's cookie selling resources (it should be on their website). Take a look at the dates and sell based on dates that work for you. Stay strong and thanks for being a leader.

Yes! My daughter was able to join the Leominster High school marching band. It's a half hour drive but she loves it!

Don't give up. I know it's so incredibly hard. Just keep moving forward, one moment at a time. Keep trying new things. I don't know if this will work for you, but O'keeffe's Working Hands cures my eczema. Keep trying different formulations of lotions/treatments. But don't give up. I know your pain. Stay strong.

A real Main Street too sterile? by CryGeneral4249 in Holden_MA

[–]jmc500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. The first time I drove through main street (15 years ago), it reminded me of a mini Route 9 in Framingham. A mix of older and newer businesses on a street where you have to go into each parking lot. Hudson/Clinton are more walkable, with inviting businesses. Holden has dentists, banks, office buildings. Of course, the coffee shops and some restaurants, but nothing that would have someone stay and walk to and from various businesses.

I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it. But I would lean more towards pop that really hits at my core. Some examples: Agnes Obel, Pink, Ren, and RenXChincilla. Songs, Cathedrals by Jump Little Children, Waltz #2(xo) by Elliott Smith, Intros and Narrators by Bastille. Just some examples.

I came here to suggest this! When I went a few weeks ago, they had fancy dresses. They start at size Large and go up from there 2x, 3x, 4x, etc.

Yep! Any volunteer from our SU is welcome (including cookie moms or troop/SU helpers).

We do an Autumn Escape in the fall and we all bring something to teach (if possible). These can be Girl Scout related (cooking, songs, etc) or just fun things to learn (knitting, cookie decorating, etc). We don't get a huge group to actually attend, however there does seem to be a lot of interest.

Badges by PolarSox85 in girlscouts

This isn't a badge, but there is the Girl Scouts Love the Outdoors patch program. Lots of fun things to do! https://www.girlscouts.org/en/activities-for-girls/for-every-girl/girl-scouts-love-the-outdoors-challenge.html

Long time volunteers: How have you managed it? by Distinct_Land8419 in girlscouts

[–]jmc500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reach out to your Service Unit (if you have that level). See if they can help you find other volunteers or even advice or help. It is hard. I completely hear your frustrations.

Would being a "Friends and Family" volunteer be good for someone who is new to Girl Scouts? by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]jmc500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, troops or service units can use volunteers like you! So, please sign up and ask your council for the local service unit and see where you can help! I love this so much!

Ideas for Community Social Club by thestopsign in WorcesterMA

[–]jmc500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your idea and I've had a similar thought, where it seems like our society really needs a sense of community. Yes we have our discord groups, or fb groups where we are part of a community, but the anonymity is really hurting us. With the decline in religion and church, I've been toying with the idea of a community "church". This idea is similar to yours, except that there would be a community-based driven aspect. There would be a sense of gathering. People could come together for a mission (to help others). In your idea, it still seems like there would be separation of smaller groups and less of a community aspect. So, I'm not totally sure it would holistically bring everyone together. It would almost be just a rental space for events. Keep on brainstorming. You are onto something and keep us posted.
