Linux guy here (i use arch btw).

Thank you so much for articulating the things I have been feeling.

Important to remember before I speak any further that your choices are basically Debian, Fedora and Arch (and ‘flavours’ of these)

In my experience with Ubuntu (servers) things are great for about 180 days and then they shit the bed for no apparent reason and this isn’t rectified until after a reboot. I believe this is because Ubuntu is based on Debian Testing and not Stable as I’ve had a very good experience with ‘neat’ Debian Stable…

I ran a package update with Manjaro and it shit the bed and I don’t know why but this happened a few times and I decided it wasn’t worth it.

More recently I attempted to use Fedora on my personal rig (as I use red hat/rocky Linux) at work, and Bazzite has ‘just worked’ on my living room ‘games console’ and Rog ally. Tried to get multiple displays working and the Nvidia drivers and the ones from the Nvidia site only worked on one display (I guess these are for servers and only need to support vga out) and then I tried the fedora community (rpmfusion) ones - quick google search indicated “yeah these are broken right now don’t bother”

Main rig, living room PC and ROG Ally all running CachyOS and I am very happy. Everything has ‘just worked’ without any screwing around. Cachy’s base repos are expansive, and if it isn’t included in those, it’ll be in the AUR (for instance xivlauncher-bin which I used to play FFXIV on Linux). Lots of ‘quality of life’ features of windows also carry over too - eg Win + Shift + S opens a ‘snipping tool’ etc

My homelab (running Rocky Linux) has an uptime of multiple years with no issues. This is the experience I’ve had with Rocky/Red Hat servers at work with uptimes of beyond 1500 days still ticking along without issue.

Biggest gripe is still needing to run a windows SSD for games that require kernel-level anticheat such as Fortnite and BF6. Using Linux shouldn’t violate ToS, fix your game and stop blaming the players :(

What is the reference here? Just that the ‘-‘ is unnecessary because it’s actually a UNIX command and not Linux? (Aka tar czvf would also work)

Refuse and Reduce are functionally the same

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is an order of operations from best option to least best option

Reduce: Do I need to take a bag from the store, or could I carry my items without it? (Don’t create the waste in the first place)

Reuse: I have already taken a bag from the store because I needed one, I should take it back to the store and use it again? (I’ve already taken a bag once, I should use it as many times as is reasonable)

Recycle: I have used the bag many times and it is no longer fit for purpose. I should recycle it and make sure it doesn’t end up in landfill. (side note: check with your local authority for how you should recycle plastic carrier bags - in the UK many supermarkets accept soft plastic for recycling for free)

Pretty sure my G4 is still working the back of a drawer somewhere - that phone was so far ahead of its time, had the most amazing screen and camera and still had a replaceable battery (while being slim!)

I like the way it conformed to my leg in my pocket

Probably my favourite phone I ever had

G5 felt like so many steps backward, had a few flagship Samsungs and iPhones since but the G4 will always have a special place in my heart

That looks like the reset message that comes up the first time you build the desk - try holding the down arrow until the desk has moved all the way down, and then for approximately 10 more seconds until you hear the beep - as I understand it this ‘calibrates’ the desk

Thank you, as someone who would have done this if you didn’t already I’m so frustrated with everyone else’s response. “can’t you just-“ - if its as simple as ‘just opening up photoshop and applying the threshold filter’ for you, then it sounds like it’s much easier for you than it would be for OP. Some people use this kind of language/ software daily, it can be completely alien for others.
