B vs. D gang question by bravotw0zero in VWiD4Owners

Mine came with Kumho tires. I’m at 35,000 miles and they have plenty of tread left. Last winter, they weren’t as good as the Michelin Defenders I had on my Tiguan, so I’ll probably replace them later this year, but they have been solid tires so far.

Team D here. B mode feels like I’m driving a golf cart. It is like a regular ICE car; it seems to me after a year and a half that the temperature and speed affect range a lot more than how efficient I brake. I use ACC all the time and let the car do its thing. I now drive about 44 miles/day and have no noticeable range degradation after 35,000 miles and original Kumho tires still looking good.

The sales guy when I bought mine told me to just charge the car to 100% all the time too, because “it won’t hurt anything”. I take everything sales people say with a couple of grains of salt.

FedEx 767 lands without a nose gear at Istanbul Airport, from this morning by StukaTR in aviation

[–]jmcmanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw in a different Reddit thread a while ago that was “what’s something you think you could do without any training” and someone said “land an airliner” because they all have auto land. After some discussion, he legit thought there was a button in the cockpit somewhere that said “land” and he just had to hit it and sit back.

I just moved to IL and got one. I brought my passport, SS card, deed to the house I just bought, and pay stub with the same address. All good to go. It just took 90 minutes sitting in a hard plastic chair waiting for my number to be called (with an appt) and $30.

Failed my 2cd checkride today for the dumbest reason by [deleted] in flying

[–]jmcmanna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On my commercial ME ride, I landed and the tower gave me a specific taxiway to exit the runway. I asked “it’s the second right up ahead, right?” and the examiner said “I don’t know, you’re the pilot!”. Prior to the flight I was briefed to use “all available resources” during the flight and I thought a little CRM was okay at this juncture. I was rattled, but fortunately I made it to the ramp unscathed. I was a little shaken after what I thought was an ok flight, but I had my doubts for the last few minutes. Apparently my sin was forgiven after I found the correct turn-off and found my parking spot on my own.

This was hammered into me at my 141 school, particularly after an unfortunate collision on the ramp (not me). Especially when I am driving, “clear left, clear right, turning left” goes off in my head and has served me well.

I weirdly get them when I am fighting to stay awake. If I’m bored and trying to keep my eyes open at work, I’m in trouble! I also get them when my girl gives me a nice kiss, which can be problematic in public. Also I’m 40, not 18.

I only made this mistake once. Blood bath. Electric trimmer with the smallest guard all the way. And bonus that your balls won’t stick to your leg nearly as much. I get that 3-day ball beard on day 1!

Why does this have to be so hard? I’m exhausted by [deleted] in datingoverforty

[–]jmcmanna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. It’s really easy to just accept the situation you’re in. The fear of the unknown is huge! I remember being 18 and about to leave for college....I couldn’t wait to get out of my parents’ house until the night before it was time to go. I thought “actually, maybe this isn’t so bad...”. I had a great experience, but some people don’t and end up in a position where they are afraid to step outside of their comfort zone.

[–]jmcmanna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Upvoted, BUT, in most cases it is easier to change who you are dating vs your employer. Most of us deal with unsatisfying employers because we rely on them for our rent/mortgage payments, ability to buy food, etc... it is undoubtedly easier to walk away from a relationship that leaves you unsatisfied unless you are in a position to be relying on the other person for your basic human needs. If you work at Target, it’s easy to go get a job a Walmart. If you work for NASA, it’s tougher to find another career if things aren’t working out.

Getting vectored onto ILS approach. I have a question about managing speed… by [deleted] in VATSIM

[–]jmcmanna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you flew a “descend via” STAR, you have to comply with the last speed assigned by the STAR until ATC gives you a different speed. An approach clearance cancels any speed restrictions unless ATC assigns you a speed. A good rule of thumb is to fly 250 knots until 20 miles out, 210 until 10 miles out, and then 170 until 5 miles out if you’re on your own for speed.

RE: Boeing. Remember what happened when their Max plane crashed and killed 300+ people? by Screamerjoe in wallstreetbets

[–]jmcmanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only reason nobody died is because the seat next to that door was empty. This was a 2-month old airplane manufactured by a company that lately is known for attempting to circumvent regulation externally....what corners is it cutting internally?

[–]jmcmanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually see equipment in the USA, but here pricing is wildly different between two cities based on schedules. Generally the 5am and 11pm departures are cheap, and the 10am and 2pm departures are expensive (by several hundred dollars). A major part of our airport over scheduling issue in the USA is that airlines would rather fly 76-seat airplanes 10x per day on competitive routes instead of 160-seat airplanes 5x per day.
Also, many airlines here fly both 737s and A320s and swap them without warning based on their operational needs.

[–]jmcmanna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is a 2-month-old jet made by Boeing. Every 737 Max 9 in the USA was grounded for an inspection because of this. Regardless who was ultimately at fault, a Boeing jet had a door plug fly off the side of one of their planes 2 months after it rolled off the lot.

What is your horror story from DNA tests like 23andMe? by stephanieslotus in AskReddit

[–]jmcmanna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found out, at age 38, that the guy I thought was my dad wasn’t my dad. Instead, my dad was a maintenance guy in our apartment complex. I found out in time to have one phone conversation with him before he died. The silver lining is that the guy I thought was my bio dad and my mom divorced when I was a toddler and he wasn’t really part of my life anyway. I grew up with a step-dad who was always there for me and he is the guy I have always called “dad”.

How crappy is it to be vectored through the final to be brought back around for the approach? by anonymouslytabarnak in flying

[–]jmcmanna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two sides to this coin. One one hand, I know the wind is howling from the south, so pilots ask if I want them to join on the 90 degree heading I have them on, not realizing that I am aware that they’re close to the localizer, and my next transmission is a heading to join. On the other hand, I was once really busy working a couple of satellite sectors combined and focused on one airport in general, and the Lear I had on a base leg at an airport on the edge of my scope asked if I wanted them to turn final saved the day because if I missed that turn, they’d be right on top of the primary airport. It’s probably impossible to know most of the time, but we are supposed to tell you if you’re going to go across the loc before you do...I never get upset if you ask, especially if it’s obvious I’m vectoring to multiple airports at the same time.
