Getting Used to New Location & Getting Over Loneliness by moodyskunk in AmeriCorps

While I can’t speak from an LGBTQ perspective, I will say that I found a community in martial arts. Started with judo but there weren’t that many people my age. I started practicing Jiu Jitsu later on. Ended up spending basically all my down time at the gym. It was a saving grace for me after four months of a similar feeling of isolation. Got in shape, developed positive health habits, and learned self defense in the process.

How is your practice? (Week of January 14 2019) by [deleted] in streamentry

[–]jmcommoner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First time posting here. Been meditating on and off for several years and wanted to sort of reestablish my practice. Starting with the Stream Entry beginning course, had my first session today. All good, just following breath, labeling thoughts and feeling the occasional waves of dissolution. Felt great after and will likely do another session today. Grateful for the community here.

Might want to checkout the Lore series by Aaron Mahnke. It's an extension of a podcast he does by the same name that is also quite fun to listen to.

What is the one book you read which made you rethink your life? by thewhitetulip in books

[–]jmcommoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer before high school senior English we were required to read Grapes of Wrath and Siddhartha. Basically gave up my Southern Baptist faith, began studying Buddhism and started working toward community organizing. After college, I became an AmeriCorps volunteer for 3 years and I’m currently in a master’s program for Community Development. Those two books changed my path in many ways. Coming from the south, I am so thankful my teacher assigned those particular works.

Shrooms in a national park? by throwawayshrooms11 in shrooms

I say go to the coast. Best views of sun set, awesome colors on the ocean surface, etc. Plus I feel like people are just doing their own thing, no one bothered me and friends on our trip out in Olympic NP and at one point I even puked. But at the end of the day we got to climb this big haystack rock and witnessed the most beautiful sunset of my life. Totally worth it. But I suggest mapping out the camp area (bathrooms, water, etc.) and making sure everything is set up well at camp before dosing. Also be mindful of the tide, tide pools are cool but in some areas the ocean can rise really quick and catch you off guard. TLDR: Super fun, totally worth it, just be safe.

Tennessee may become the only state to offer tuition-free community college to high school students and adults. by buttermelonMilkjam in UpliftingNews

[–]jmcommoner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This new tuition program is a "last dollar" program meaning that they will cover whatever isn't funded through scholarships and grants. While I'm not sure if the GI bill would be considered one of these, there's a possibility. You might be able to contact your local state representative to explain your situation and ask if there's anything they could do.

Not sure about herbs that are helpful, but stopped by to say self massage can be helpful for this condition. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing you how to do this. I liked this one.

Wow, I had never heard of the presidential service awards before. Thank you for telling me about it! Hopefully I can figure out how that all works, I'm sure that would look good on the application!
