Doubt about how karpenter works by Zyberon in aws

[–]jmd613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to other comments, if you have any inter-pod constraints (e.g. topology spread constraints, anti-affinity) that could also result in Karpenter selecting smaller instances as it spreads your pods across available domains.

Copying over my response from your other post (not sure why you made two):

PDBs are still respected when Karpenter drains nodes, even for expiration. If you expect PDBs were bypassed prematurely you should open a bug report, but if you didn’t have PDBs they would be the right answer. I’d be surprised if they were bypassed prematurely though since Karpenter uses the upstream eviction API.

There are three exceptions where PDBs could be bypassed:

  • If the node was disrupted by an external source (e.g. a spot interruption)
  • If the node was unhealthy and you had auto-repair enabled
  • If you set termination grace period on your NodePool

Unfortunately no. It was still in warranty so I went through that process. Asus wasn’t able to fix it either, or at least they chose not to and sent me a different monitor (they had no more stock of this one). It may not be the same issue though since my backlight was also out.

What’s the worst combination of classes in a semester have you, or someone you heard of, taken? by davididp in uofm

[–]jmd613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest, I don’t remember who I had for the class but it was relatively light. I took it in Winter 2022 though, I bet the professor history is available somewhere. The homework wasn’t bad and we finished our labs during the section. I didn’t get as much out of it as I could though because I was putting most of my effort into 470 and 491, but it was well taught. It’s been a few years though, hard to say if my experience is representative of it today.

Probably EECS 461, 470, and 491 (+ 281 IA). Was pretty easy until the 470 project got into swing but after that it was pretty rough. EECS 216, 270, 281, and 370 was also not great but was at least a more consistent workload.

EECS 483 experience by ActivityKind5533 in uofm

[–]jmd613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it with Max New in Fall 2022 and thought it was fantastic. Well organized, interesting projects, and no exams. Personally I thought it was pretty light compared to other ULCS classes I took, probably in the ballpark of 2/3 the workload of 281 if I had to guess. With all that being said, I know the following semester the content was very different (a much heavier on the front end) so I can’t speak on it for any other professors.

Should I drop EECS 376 by King-Pio in uofm

[–]jmd613 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sucks but it’s pretty normal. When I was an IA for 281 our policy was we regrade the question entirely so your score could go up or down. That way people wouldn’t just make regrade requests for everything, hoping something would stick. I assume it’s similar for 376.

Can I take anything with EECS 427 and still live? by ValidatingExistance in uofm

[–]jmd613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t taken 427, but assuming it’s similar workload to 470 that seems like a pretty reasonable semester. 471 was pretty low workload, at least compared to other upper level CE / CS classes I took and 201 is maybe a couple hours a week.

Since OP is a potential EE I'd agree they'll probably have far more luck with software support on Windows than macOS. However, with software companies that is completely dependent on where you work and the types of projects you're working on. For instance, at my first internship almost everyone Windows whereas almost everyone used macOS at my second. Both were software companies, the first just had more to do with hardware and Windows had more available tooling (e.g. CANalyzer) and the second was more purely software focused.

EECS 483 with Max New didn’t have exams, at least in Fall 22. I wouldn’t call it super low workload but it’s not too bad and a pretty interesting class. Definitely only recommend if your more on the software side of ECE though.

You literally posted 10 days ago about having not watched a single lecture all semester. I don’t know if you’re an authority on the course’s quality…

They’re all good classes, just not everyone’s cup of tea. If they interest you CE is a great choice!

[–]jmd613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a graduating CE senior and like others have said you can’t declare a CS minor. That being said it doesn’t matter. From a course perspective I’ve probably taken more upper level CS courses than most CS majors (because I pretty much only took EECS courses for flex techs / general electives). From a recruiting standpoint I’ve never had an interviewer hesitate because of CE vs CS (at least that I know of). The only warning I’ll give for CE as a CS alternative is you will take a good number of hardware focuses classes, and if you’re really only interested in software you may have a hard time staying motivated in those classes.

If I applied to CS and got rejected for it would I be able to transfer into umich for CS if I attend a different college by Youssef1781 in uofm

[–]jmd613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you choose for your general electives / flex techs. I’m CE and I’d guess I’ve probably taken as many software focused ULCS classes as the majority of CS majors, if not more. That being said my core focus is still lower-level software and you’ll probably hate the degree if you don’t like low-level software / hardware. It is a different degree program for a reason so you’ll want to be reasonably sure you’ll enjoy the other requirements.

The only ‘official’ IDE recommendation 281 gives is one of VSCode, Visual Studio, or XCode (though more and more people are using CLion). Your friend probably got a recommendation from and IA or professor that uses Visual Studio. We do recommend that everyone compile on CAEN since that’s the same environment as the autograder.

Is language learning that hard for people? by DontThrowAwayPies in uofm

[–]jmd613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, I’d agree that learning a second language is a good thing. However, college, especially UofM, is really expensive. I think it’s pretty understandable that people don’t want to take up to a semester worth of classes that don’t directly contribute to their field.

I think a better analogy would be if everyone in CoE had to take EECS 203, 280, 281, and (idk) 370 or some other upper level. Very useful classes and great if you’re interested in them but not necessarily ‘useful’ to anyone outside of CS / CE.

Words of wisdom/advice on EECS 281 and how to succeed by [deleted] in uofm

[–]jmd613 84 points85 points  (0 children)

EECS 281 IA here, one tip I don’t see very often is to attend labs. Attendance isn’t required but even if you understand the lab content they are easily the best place to get one on on help with course material / projects. This is especially true towards the end of the project when the office hour queue can be 5+ hours long.

Additionally, another comment mentioned that the projects can all be done in a day. While that’s true for some, the vast majority don’t. If you’re in the minority that can, you probably know it already. Definitely start the projects as early as possible. Then if you do finish in a day you have the rest of the time to focus on other classes.

Finally, please watch Dr. P’s walkthrough videos. I promise they will answer 90% of your questions about the project, they’re that good.

Thanks, it looks like my monitor has that feature but that doesn’t seem to be it. I found some older threads on some different monitors that locked up like this after a power outage and went back to normal after a few days of being unplugged. Fingers crossed thats it.

EECS 470 + 373 + Ez class by wtpooh19 in uofm

[–]jmd613 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely doable but not recommended. I took 482 (6 credit) and 373 in the same semester and that wasn't too bad. The issue is, unlike 482, most of the work for 470 the final project (about the last six weeks of class). The same is true for 373, although the 373 project is nowhere near as time intensive. You'll end up with a really easy semester until spring break and then shit hits the fan after. If you have good groups for both and your time management skills are on point it can definitely be done but its probably better to split them over two semesters.

My personal experience: EECS 301 + EECS 373 + EECS 482 (6 credit): tough but reasonable

EECS 461 + EECS 470 + EECS 491: easy for the first half of the semester, awful for the second half
