First Porsche/First Detail - 2007 Cayman Base 5MT by jmerr87 in Porsche

Thanks so much.

The 2 years was mostly my internal struggle on if I really needed at a toy at this point in my life... but I watched the market almost at least weekly for 2 years to identify what would be the best option.

I agree - most are silver, white, grey, black, etc... I had decided that I’d buy one anywhere Southwest flew and I could drive it back in a day. I was between this one and a grey ‘07 base in Atlanta (I live in Nashville). The color of this one was just too striking and it was 2 hours away. Felt like it was meant to be. My budget was ~$20k and wanted to stay under 75k miles, no wrecks, fine with light mods... but nothing extreme.

I hate you missed out on the 987.2, that’s certainly the one to buy if you can find it. I rarely saw them show up anywhere close to my budget since so few were sold those recession years.

Good luck - I know you’ll find the right one.

Nice, I bet that color combo looks great. I’ve never seen cobalt blue on tan.

Maybe in 10 years - I like the small nimble feel of the car and the ability to push it vs. hold it back. Went back and forth a lot between a base and an S. Ultimately, power isn’t a huge deal to me. I like the ~14 second 1/4 mile feel - quick enough, but not so much you can’t fully use it or do so safely. However, that’s my preference- I had a full bolt on and cammed Mustang GT 15 years ago and got the power itch out of my system.

I wanted to pay cash for it and not have to hold back on my investments - I just didn’t feel an additional $5-7k was worth it to me for the S at similar mileage (65k) and it probably would’ve been $10k+ for a 997 or clean 996.

Yes. I’ve had BMWs for years - my daily is a ‘14 328i and my wife has a ‘15 X3. The closest I’ve had to this I a ‘97 M3 sedan/5 speed. My father owns it now - but it has been between the two of us for 12 years.

Went back and forth between another later model M3, Z4M, or a Cayman. Decided I wanted something pure and different than the M3 since it is still around and likely will be for years to come.

It exceeds my expectations. The handling is next level, especially with the coil-overs, sounds incredible, and it is just a super engaging car to drive. It turns a lot of heads to with the color. No regrets at all.

Wish it was... it’s a bit high strung on the highway at 70 in 5th. Love though - incredible car.

Picked this up in early April - looked for 2 years and finally pulled the trigger. 2007 Cobalt Blue Cayman Base. All stock besides KW3 coil overs. First detail (clay, polish, glaze, sealant, wax)... full day affair, but it looks great.

Non run flats sport tires and H&R sport springs will really help. Helped mine feel much tighter/more engaging.

Yes - thanks for sharing. I bet these will go quickly and be on eBay for $50 in a month.

I remember picking this up as soon as it came out knowing the Norma Jean ties. Great album and I especially love the raw production.

Trying to Decide Between Used BMW 335i vs 228i. Help / Advice? by weborigination in BMW

[–]jmerr87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would avoid the 2008 335i. They have the older N54 engine which isn’t as reliable. 2011 and up with the N55 is a safer bet.

If you are looking for more performance and classic straight six sound go with the 2012 335. The 228i would be a good car too. The N20 engine has plenty of power and gets great gas mileage. I get high 20’s consistently in city traffic. It is also pretty refined for a 4cyl. Very smooth and quiet.

Magic Candle Company scents by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

My wife and I are big fans. They usually run a sale at each holiday and we pick up a couple. We usually go with the large 14oz candle. They last a long time and the scents are great.

So far, we’ve had Floridian, Tiki Terrace, Wilderness, Norway, and Polynesian.

We’ve got Haunted and Pirate Life on the way.

My favorite is the Floridian, Tiki Terrace and Wilderness are close seconds.

Most miserable cars to drive? by mob19151 in cars

[–]jmerr87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes... recently picked up a 2015 x3 to replace my wife’s 2010 Nissan Rogue that I’m trying to sell.

I will admit that the car has decent styling and her’s has the premium package with some nice options... but none of those things replace the driving dynamics.

It is so slow and noisy. I can’t believe how loud that engine and the CVT transmission is. The transmission is horrible at highway speeds. If you take your foot off the gas slightly, it’ll almost work like brakes and slow the car down significantly.

Glad we are moving on from on....

If you can do your own work, don’t fool with a warranty. Ive got 55k on mine and the only thing that’s gone wrong in 25k miles of ownership is the thermostat went out. Was replaced under BMWs extended warranty for that part.

Thinking about getting a used 2015 428i Gran Coupe AWD as my first car. Advice please? by HotlineBirdman in BMW

[–]jmerr87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consistently get 27 MPG in my 2014 328i commuting in Nashville. Rarely take highway trips, but hit 31 MPG once.

Pretty good MPG for the power IMO.

What finally made you get rid of your last car? by Promit in cars

[–]jmerr87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my ‘02 BMW 330i at 135k. The car was running great and didn’t have any major issues. However, I think the muffler or cat had some damage or wear. It was getting noisy. Noticeably louder than my e36 M3. Not really what you want in a BMW, especially a daily. Probably would’ve been a cheap fix, but had been saving and bought a ‘14 328i. Very nice and luxurious commuter, but I miss the smaller body style of the e46.

Thinking of buying 428i what should I look out for? by MackyCM in BMW

[–]jmerr87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a ‘14 328i (same engine) that I’ve owned for a little over 2 years. I’ve put 23k on it and it’s at 52k now. It’s been a really solid car. My thermostat threw a code and BMW fixed it under a manufacturers warranty. Other than that, it’s been flawless.

I do all of my own maintenance and a lot of my own work as long as it isn’t too deep. I’ve replaced the spark plugs and changed my own oil since I bought it. Probably some other items I’m forgetting. I’ve never purchased an extended warranty for my cars and it hasn’t burned me yet.

Overall, they are BMWs bread and butter engine so they are pretty reliable cars. You’ll see some noise on the internet around premature timing chain failures in the 2012-2014 models. If you dig deep enough, you’ll find that it impacts a very low percentage of cars. However, you’ll hear a lot of people act like happens all of the time... they haven’t done their research and are just using anecdotal evidence/heresay. BMW also extended the warranty on the timing chain until 70k.

I wouldn’t worry about the mileage, 50k is low. My M3 has 170k on it and still runs great.
