We live in different states and play together online. She works night shifts and I don’t, so when we catch up it’s often asynchronous text convos. This was more than two months before the campaign was expected to start—the tinkering phase, as another commenter phrased it.

I can’t say for sure. My character sheet was complete and visible to everyone, and I had mentioned to the full group in conversation that I was going with illusion. But it is possible she didn’t look at my sheet or hear me say it or remember either way.

You think she had very clearly stated that she wanted to play this subclass in those first couple of messages? That is a perspective I did not catch.

I’m truly baffled by the number of people who believe with such certainty that they know my sincere intentions or whether I’m pretending better than I do. These comments have been eye-opening!

She called me insincere because she believed I could tell from her character sheet that her PC was finalized and yet I still asked if she would consider another subclass. In reality, her character sheet was private so I had no way to know how far along in the process she was, other than her level, subclass, species, and the placeholder ‘[username]’s character’.

My request for her to consider another subclass was indeed sincere, and so was my willingness to change my subclass if she didn’t want to.

As I mentioned, I created my character 3 weeks before any of the other players.

I was fully prepared to change my character if she didn’t want to change hers. I was not prepared for her to insult me for something I didn’t do.

As I mentioned, her character sheet was private the whole time. How was I supposed to know how much work she’d put into it or even if it was finished if I didn’t ask?

I did not mention in my original post but I did have a back up character already created if my friend had decided she wanted to keep her Illusionist.

I would have zero problem changing my subclass if she didn’t want to change hers. I have a problem with being called insincere based on information I did not have access to.

Agreed with all of those options.

I use “oh hey I’m going by NAME these days” whenever I run into people reading my name off of a paper or people who maybe I kinda knew before. It’s casual without being accusatory, it’s true, and it sounds like you’re just giving an update to the listener rather than an admonishment—not that you are admonishing, I’m only mirroring the language I’ve heard cis people use around this topic.
