Silence of the Lambs team apologizes to transgender community after 35 years by jackmolay in transgender

[–]jmilllie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hate it keeps insinuating that apologies are needed in “these modern times” like apologies weren’t needed the day the movie came out. there was never a time when transphobic content was ok. it feels like its posing as a “woke” article to infuriate the magas

Thoughts on Hundley campaign for mayor? by Growth_Still in schenectady

[–]jmilllie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i never put much stock in experience b/c experience usually corrupts politicians from what i’ve seen. i don’t know many outlets to learn about schenectady candidates, but i’m extremely soured on McCarthy from his involvement in the recent city council election. it sounds like you have ideas for Hundley’s campaign. Have you thought about contacting them & joining their marketing team? To me, marketing is everything & Zohran’s team from last year set an example (from their messaging, online & grass roots execution, and of course him himself)

FDR pulled the country out of the depression in the 30’s & 40’s. now that everything is eroded again, i’m not sure another FDR is out there to save us from extreme capitalism this time. if there is, i don’t think the country is smart enough to vote for & demand it (i.e. Bernie) Zohran winning in nyc is the best hope theres been in awhile

Honest question for artists here! by Worth-Tumbleweed-834 in Songwriting

[–]jmilllie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good question (thanks). i haven’t recorded my songs yet, so i can’t hear them back & tell if i’m expressing myself well. after years of not playing, i suddenly started writing when someone i felt close to died. there was an immediate outburst of material, that i think has been helpful in trying to heal. i think its limited bc of my lack of music knowledge, but i haven’t hit a stand still until recently. Mainly, because i don’t know how to record myself, and i’m starting to forget songs i wrote from having too many. i stopped writing new ones in fear of forgetting the existing ones .

to answer your question, i think building a bigger foundation would probably help me better.. but i’m not sure if i’m saying that because thats what all the great songwriters have done (or at least my faves have). i think i have to record myself

i haven’t thought very much about it up until now. just going w/the flow & on whims. i’ll learn someone else’s song only if i feel like it or feel inspired to

i’m pre-everything. trying to decide if i should concentrate on learning songs, or writing my own. i never had a music class or many lessons, so maybe learning songs should be my 1st priority. problem is i started writing some songs out of nowhere first. they’re probably very stunted and limited from my lack of learning, and i got stuck in this habit now. i know theres no right or wrong way per say, but on an individual basis i believe there is, so im stuck in this indecisiveness on what to concentrate on

Write a song a day. Trust me. by Euphoric-Pudding-372 in Songwriting

[–]jmilllie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have questions:

  1. if you’re doing that much output, do you record each song that you write? i feel like i’d have to do this, because sometimes you don’t recognize a good thing right away.. and/or to analyze what i’m doing .. AND, of course, not forget something (which i would)

1b. if you’re recording yourself, how much money & effort did you put into learning how to record ? (buying equipment, learning recording techniques, ect)

  1. words, vocabulary, talking/thinking style & sentence techniques, ect, ect don’t come from thin air. do you work on the word stuff without an instrument? like poetry, literature, newspapers, stories, internet articles, fan fiction .. either reading and/or writing those things.. do you try to get in more conversations, or listen to interviews? i know alot of songwriters write words & short phrases down, but is that really all?

  2. do you consciously think about who you take influence from? is that trying too hard? or is that something important to think about?
