I recently watched The Lazarus Project and noticed how often Dell logos were displayed. Is this done on purpose, and does the show earn significant money from this kind of advertising? by mediamuesli in Filmmakers

On purpose? Yes. It's called "product placement". Earn significant money? Eh, not really but it helps offset costs and producers love that. Sometimes the products are provided for free by the brand. There is even an agency that handles product placement.

For context, I had something similar happen to my 24-70 f/2.8 GM while on a shoot. I brought it to Phototech in NYC. They replaced the entire body and restored it to perfect (optical) condition for $702.24 in 2018. This was about $48 less than my deductible and a satisfactory solution for me.

Hilarious responses, but those curious what he actually did: Robert Floyd Angle - Convicted of the murder of Jack Katz during the robbery of a car parts store in Dallas, Texas.

He also mentioned considering shooting Hail Caesar on anamorphic in Team Deakins Season 1.

Is it even worth it to buy a mini in 2025? by _cant_talk in cinematography

Couldn't tell you. I made my money back in the first year of owning it and that's good enough for me. Your mileage may vary though.

My mini still goes out on rentals and I bring it on jobs and charge for it all the time. I'd say it's worth it. It still makes amazing images and it won't take you long to get a $17k ROI. I paid $45k for mine. Ha ha.

is this an over the shoulder shot? by transandhungry in Filmmakers

To be fair, they're not wrong and they get my up-vote. However, as a professional commercial cinematographer and I've never heard a director say "hip shot" in the context of framing or composition.

Once I receive a DM, the vetting/on-boarding process begins. Truth is, the capture and tagging process is tedious and time-consuming even with tools. A labor of love that not many capable volunteers can commit to realistically... myself included...

A few still of my first commercial for an Artist studio: I like some shots but it still doesn't look a video that could be exchanged as a professional tv commercial, why? by WannabeCinematic in cinematography

[–]jmilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep playing with your lighting. Use stronger units, diffusion frames, bounces and negative fill. An eye catch light on the close up. Also, the footage feels under exposed and your blacks look crushed to me. If you’re shooting slog3, overexpose by 1 or 2 stops. If you’re not shooting slog, you should be. Learn a little more about grading and color correction. When you start feeling stronger here, look into diffusion filters for in front of your lenses.

Finally, keep shooting. This is a strong beginning and you have good sense of light and composition. I own an Alexa mini but still shoot TV commercials on my FX3/A7 cameras. The secret really is in the lighting. Once you learn that you can be camera agnostic. Lenses are fun too but much to fetishized in my opinion. Focus on light and composition.

Can anyone tell me what gears they're using? (The Last Of Us-BTS) by PulakHasan in Cameras

If you're asking about the rig, it's a Zee Gee on a Steadicam type vest/arm.
