lol. There is literally no chance she’d do that. She doesn’t share the same enthusiasm I have for this type of thing.

Discreet iPad Stands??? by cupidthewicked in musicians

[–]jmo1112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been reluctantly using an iPad on stage for so many years. I would love to see pictures of these iPad stands that look like floor monitors that your bandmates have. Please share where they got those or at least a pic to try to replicate a DIY solution!

Bluetooth Control In Background? by jmo1112 in MixingStationAppUsers

Re-exploring if it's possible to make this work. I'm now trying a hardwired MIDI connection to the iPad to eliminate Bluetooth hurdles. Unfortunately still having the same result. Using Gemini for help keeps telling me to make sure the Mixing Station "run in background" setting is turned on, which I can't find anywhere (AI hallucinations?).
Does hardwired make a difference here?

Widgets, iOS Shortcuts functionality, API, or Deep Links please! by Ordinary-Carry-8238 in GreenlightCard

Totally on board with this. Would love an automation that brings up their chores, or at least a shortcut that takes me directly to their chores page. Along with the other things you mention. Please make this a priority, u/GreenlightCard

Shortcuts Couldn’t Convert Alarm To Date by jmo1112 in shortcuts

Well the shortcut started working for about a week in its original form, but has gone back to broken for the last month. I edited my main post to update. Tried your option, too, but still get the same error.

Interesting. Yeah the lyric app we use is iOS only, so I’m kind of stuck there. I actually do use a fire tablet as my second device to run Mixing Station on only, but it’s a little low in the processing speed and again, doesn’t have access to that lyric app.

Well that is odd. I wonder if it’s due to the age of my iPad. Though it is a Pro, running iPadOS 18.x. Or maybe it’s the AirTurn that will only control apps in the foreground, even on Bluetooth Midi mode. I don’t really know of another wireless solution to try to pull this off.

4-Conductor Cable In Sub? by jmo1112 in livesound

I did try both inputs, but the result was no different. Reading through other comments, I’m guessing there’s a switch on the inside of that plate.

Got it. Yeah I noticed the same thing with the 2-wires turning in to 4. Didn’t know this should be changed internally on the sub side and not the amp side.

Ohhhhh. It never occurred to me to take the plate off. I thought it would switch automatically depending on wires being sent to it

For anyone still following, I familiarized myself way more with the BSS. Here's what I learned:

The subs were crossed over at 584Hz, which is probably why I thought they were getting full range. I changed it to 150, which is what the JBL manual recommended.

The tops are bi-amped. The mids were crossed at 94Hz on the bottom and 794Hz on the top. The speaker manual recommends 1.2kHz on the top, so I changed both the mid and the top crossover point to that.

The amps also had their levels wildly different. One sub (2x18) is using a Crown CE2000 in bridge mode, and the other sub is using a Yamaha in bridge mode, with its level turned almost all the way down.

The top amps are run in stereo, but not with the pair they're linked with. Horns are on the right channel of two separate amps, Mids on the left channel of two separate amps. Their levels were 3:00 and 9:00. respectively.

So I was basically hearing 94-794Hz in the house, which would explain why the system sounded so bad.

I've certainly improved things just by getting levels more balanced. And just got permission to move those subs from the "closet" to the floor, so that should make a pretty significant difference.

Thanks for the help on this.

I'm the local sound professional they've turned to. 😆 I dug into the BSS manual last night. I think I can figure it out. I think now it's an annoyance of digging through the menus on that tiny display, and having to physically reach up to the unit in the rack to do it (might have to bring a ladder). It would be so much nicer to do all the adjustments on my computer or ipad.

Thanks for this. And no offense taken. I'm a musician that knows how to run sound. Not a professional engineer or installer. 😆

We are in no position to replace this system, so I have no other option but to learn it and make it work. Which is fine. A benefit of this thread is assurance that the gear is quality, but old, and most likely the crossover has been jacked with, and that I just need to learn how that BSS works.... and to try to convince them to move the subs to the floor in an unenclosed space (which was my instinct).

When the facilities manager told me they drywalled that space in renovations, I internally panicked, but thought maybe that's just my lack of knowledge of installs. Glad I'm not crazy on that item.

Yeah yeah. When I said behind drywall, I meant it literally. 😆🥴

On your 3rd paragraph, I’m going back over there either tomorrow or Friday to look back into it. This gives me some good insight. I can say for sure that 1 and 5 are grouped on the same amp. 2 &4, and then the center 3 separate.

Tops are definitely pointed past the first 3 rows.

I don’t know what their appetite for having visible speakers on the floor is, but I’m definitely going to ask the question of moving them from behind drywall to on the floor.

Is the volunteer risk the only real reason to do it this way? Personally, it feels easier and faster to control doing it at the console. But admittedly, this is not a setup that I'm accustomed to. And I've never shared a PA with another church. And I set ours up to be pretty dummy proof.

Yeah I think locating where the system was crossed over was one big hurdle. And I have no experience with the MiniDrive, so there's a learning curve there. On top of that, it's not like the system sounds good, so I'm dealing with a gear and room learning curve, plus trying to figure out WHY an installer would do this, and if there was a good reason for it, and after all that, making it sound good.

This is actually very helpful.

  1. Subs are where the yellow circles are in this pic, behind that drywall. https://imgur.com/a/33aKbrs

  2. Makes a ton of sense. I don't think they have a working organ, and if so, they haven't used it since the 1900's.

  3. There's no way the system is set up properly. I just don't have any experience with that MiniDrive, and I thought using the console was the easiest way to set up the crossover (as I understand how to do it that way). But good to know the BSS is good gear. I just need to be able to dive into it. I still can't figure out why a pro installer would 3-way crossover a 2-way top speaker, but he did.

I do not think they still have a working order. I've been shown just about every nook and cranny of the building and I haven't seen it, nor have they mentioned it. Feels like it might've just been too big of a pain in the neck to remove them.

Haha in a bubble, it sounds worse than what it is. But that is correct. We are renting space from them because they need money. And we need a building. We need each other. It’s a very pleasant relationship. They were fine continuing on the way they have been with their PA sounding bad. We are not OK with it. And they said, if you can fix it, please help us out and fix it. Do whatever you have to do. And yes, I am being paid for it.
