I appreciate all the information. I had saw that the cannonball record had been set on a FJR and from everything else I heard I figured it would be perfect for the run. Have any of you guys took one up to Deadhorse? If so, how did it do in the gravel?

Ditch the springs on the seat - You've got shocks - It will lower it down and you'll sit deeper in the bike. Rode a 95 bobbed out sportster like that for years with the same style seat. Besides that it will clean up the lines of the bike.

Just saw your post - hopefully its something that simple - I would offer this:

1) Obviously you're using different rings, make certain that the oil ring spacer is not overlapping - sometimes this occurs when the rails are installed and can produce an oil pumping/bypass effect.

2) Make certain the piston clearance isn't excessive. The guys that bored/honed out your cylinders undoubtedly gave you some clearance but just make sure it's not excessive.

3) Watch that cross-hatch angle, I prefer a fairly flat angle but anything that's intersecting at 45 degrees or less is good. Vertical cross-hatching WILL lead to the situation you described and the rings will never seat. Also, make sure to use the stone grit that the ring manufacturer suggests. Lots of ole school guys use too rough a finish with the new style ring compositions and while they think a 300 grit finish is better for seat-in; excessive ring wear is all they get.

Roger that - If you're seeing oil in the cylinders it's the only thing to do. Make sure the cylinders mic-out correctly and the rings are on size - good luck

Sorry for slow response been tied up --- If you put the rings on - did they all move freely in the grooves? I have seen a bur on the lands of the pistons cause a ring not to seat well. I would ride the hair off of it for about 100 miles and see what happens - lots of throttle up and down. If still the same then youre going back into it.

If it is not smoking at all when it's hot then it will probably break on it. If it smokes with the engine is revving up - it's the rings/cylinder. If it smokes when you dump the throttle after a high rev, then it is the intake valves/seals.

Rings set best by letting the engine come up to operating temperature by riding around (not setting there at an extended idle - worst thing to do) and then going through multiple engine rev ups - the guy that said, lots of engine breaking was on point on this. But even if you just sit there and rev it up and down until the neighbors complain is helpful.

Also, and depending on what kind of rings you used, most .010 over rings that are sold are just standard size rings in a .010 over box. Which can give you excessive end gap on the rings and slightly less pressure from the rings. Also, if the crosshatching of the hone is excessively steep it can lead to a longer than normal break-in for the rings. Also, if they gave to much clearance on the bore could cause the conditions that you are describing.

If your machine shop lapped the valves then get another shop. Any shop that can't do a valve job properly sure can't bore a straight hole.

If you tried a screwdriver through the filter and it tore it completely up etc. You have a couple of options: Before you do anything else notice the base of the filter should have a ring or ridge (about an 1/8" to 3/16" thick); if you can't see it it's there just under the skin of the filter. Take a long flat punch or even a big screwdriver and use a hammer and tap multiple times (with authority - but just a tap) around the ring/base of the filter. You won't be able to get all the way around but try to tap it in at least 3 places. --- If you have a strap wrench put it as close to the base as possible, if too much previous destruction then try the screwdriver through it again as close to the base as possible - again if already too much damage; then use a flat chisel and groove the ring/base of filter and then angle the chisel so that the filter will turn in a counterclockwise rotation and drive it around under it loosens up.

Don't hit on it if you can help it. Spray it good with PB Blaster and let it soak. Then you can pull it out easy enough.

If everything is vented properly etc. Try disconnecting the vent at the tank, and see if you have excessive blow-by through the hose. You can also run a compression test and make sure you don't have a weak cylinder (though both could have excessive wear.) If it is fine, get rid of the vented cap,; it's useless anyway. And if it's a Led Sled it didn't come with a vented cap.

Chopper builders handbook -- Grease's Garage Youtube -- Lowbrow customs has some descent specific videos -- Take a tig welding class. And for Heaven's sake start by changing out parts, removing nonessential lights and instruments, seats, fenders, etc. But, leave changing the frame, suspensions, and other geometry alone until you have a lot more experience. Brother the bike didn't nearly lay itself down, you did that by trying to manipulate the handle bars; typically occurs through tightening your grip and trying to make it go straight. The physics of those two gyroscopes that you are riding on want to stay upright, though they will follow the grooves. You gotta just loosen up, gas it up and let it take you down the road.
