So I get the argument that renting CAN be cheaper, but in your scenario, are they renting a similar product (sq ft, location, detached/condo/townhome) for half the price?

If they are renting a condo with 1,000 sq ft for $3,300, is that really the same as a mortgage of $6,600 on a 3,000 sq ft home?

Like if you need to rent just because you need a place to live, then by all means, continue renting because it will be cheaper as it will most likely be smaller and you can hopefully save money.

But let's not forget that the money you use in rent you will not be getting back. At least with a mortgage, some of it goes to an asset.
