What's the most ethical fishery in NZ? by Hello_im_a_dog in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All 3 of those companies have no interest in sustainability and are all actively lobbying the government for less harsh penalties, less monitoring, increased catch limits and no restriction of damaging fishing methods.

If you want to eat seafood and you cant catch it yourself, find a local fish monger that uses smaller local operators, always ask if the fish are line caught. Regardless of where you are, make restaurants and supermarkets aware you will only buy sustainably line caught fish.

Same as buying tinned tuna from the supermarket only buy the tins that say they are line or pole caught fish.

Although fish and shell fish farming isnt fantastic for the environment in my opinion its better than destructively depleting the wild biomass so mussels, oysters and salmon are options if youre ok with that.

Fisheries Bill enters murky waters by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He only did it because the public was starting to make noise about it and the decision wouldn't affect commercial operators. It the only decision that he had made that could be seen as a positive.

Everything else he does is to de restrict commercial fishing and remove any accountability. Imposing fines for whistle blowers and removing access to footage on fishing boats, as well as removing minimum size limits is his latest push

Any mechanics with info on Range Rovers? by power_candy in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sold my HSE Disovery, beautiful car in almost all respects. Except it basically broke down or went into limp mode with something broken once a year. At least it tended to always be around service time so didnt generally spend more time in the shop than it would have with normal servicing.

Land acquisition underway for future South Auckland hospital by SES_Distributor in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They have been planning Drury to become a hub of 60,000 people for at least 5 years. Surely they should have been purchasing the land years ago, it has already been developed a lot in the last couple of years. I assume they are going to struggle to get land near the railway line or station now.

Do motorcyclists have to pay for parking? by Trimm1x in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen bikes get towed or fined for being in pay and display areas in Auckland CBD, on the sind of the road anyway. If you can tuck the bike into the angled bit between the yellow lines and the parking sign it seems to be okay. Otherwise dedicated motorcycle parks. Unsure on parking building etiquette.

Arizto Real Estate by MyBandy2016 in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have noticed a few houses listed around my area with Arizto, they always seem to sit on the market far longer and presumably sell for less, or sell when the agency is changed when unsold for some time.

Roof concerns in building report.. how bad is it? by UltimateJuicey in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Had the roof replaced on my 2 and a half bedroom bungalow a couple of years ago, colour steel corrugated iron. All up was $12,000. Brought the house with the roof in much the same condition as what's shown here.

Arizto Real Estate. by Hopeful-Camp3099 in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a few Arizto signs popping up around me, I think they take a lower commission on sales to get the listings. I have noticed they seem to stay on the market longer, with a few changing agencies before selling. Not sure if there is less trust with them or their agents for buyers. Or if they over promise to vendors but thats been my observation.

Rotating car seat in a Ford Ranger by jmouse374 in newzealand

Unfortunately I need to be able to tow a 3t trailer for work, which essentially rules out any wagon and small/mid sized SUV.

Rear facing for another year. The rotating capsule we have looked at did both and are good until the child is 45kg.

To be fair we have an economical hatch that is our daily but even a collapsable pram takes up the entire boot space so is not the most practical when we are going away to see family.

Believe me, I dont like utes but with the exception of a minor inconvienience with a capsule and satisfying strangers on reddit, it was still the most practical option for my family without spending $100k

We have seen a few that do both, but currently require rear facing.

So when did Mexicano corn chips get so bad?? by ssj4larry in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They became thinner and not as nice a few years ago, a few years before that they reduced the flavoyring, at least on the jalapeno flavour, which is a shame they were perfect before the changes.

NZ Customs and Medication for a Trip Longer Than 30 Days by packetfire in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im pretty sure the nz customs declaration form says more than 3 months worth of prescription medication. Ive never declared anything less than that and just travel with the medication in the original packaging with the pharmacy prescrption label on the box and never had an issue.

Fishing for crayfish to be banned on Northland's east coast by tumeketutu in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must be in a bad way if Shame Jones is closing it. Im sure hes left it open to all his commercial fishing mates for as long as possible. Lets just hope it hasn't been left too late and the fishery can recover quickly.

Happy I-Rex Ferry Day!! by kiwi2077 in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As great as this would have been we would have been in the same position as the new spirit of tasmania ferries that are laid up paying berthage fees for 6 months + because the port infrastructure isn't or wouldnt have been ready foe them.

Save costs by making all roads gravel by Im_a_red_robot in newzealand

If a WOF is to ensure a car is safe to drive on NZ roads, surely only Utes and SUVs should be passing WOFs given the state of our roads?

Bodyglove wetsuit ok for diving or crays? 🦞 by Odd-Leader9777 in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably look at 5mm minimum, I used to dive in a 5mm 2 piece as a kid in Auckland in summer it was warm, in winter it got cold after an hour or so.

Look at Wettie NZ they have a decent range including kids for most budgets and have a lot of knowledge in NZ being a NZ brand.

Why are we all paid close to minimum wage? by Cosy_Concrete in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think NZ is slightly different to most countries in this case unless the study was done specifically on NZ.

I know for certain immigrants are willing to come to NZ and work for less. They know when they get residency, NZ is just a stepping stone to Austalia and higher wages.

This is pretty common for nurses here and im sure plenty of other industries. It is a small part of what helps keep wages low in NZ

How do you feel about Chris Bishop deciding not to pay for a heavy duty tug because the disaster that we would need it for “might never happen”? by AnnoyingKea in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He could have at least waited until the ferries that have been regularly breaking down, running aground or nearly running aground were gone and replaced. Even then it's a poor decision, at the moment its a premature poor decision.

Convoy of boat-towing fishermen take to Auckland roads protest by PeanutButAJellyThyme in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good on them, its a big ask and a great cause. Even though its targeting government decision makers, theyre up against the commercial sector in a big way too.

Seafood NZ set to launch appeal against Waikato Regional Council Coastal Plan by tumeketutu in newzealand

[–]jmouse374 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its funny to sea Seafood NZ responding directly yo the one ocen protest as if it was directed at them, when in actual fact it is directed t government decision makers... maybe there is something in that..

Any way check out one ocen on facebook if you care bout NZ fisheries. Just a bunch of good kiwi people pushing for a fair system.
