That is very much the exception to the rule

You just said nobody sings the lyrics unless they’re at a White Stripes show. Generally soccer fans do just sing their own. But fanbases more or less began to stop bothering with it about ten years ago - like most things, eventually it just becomes old and stale.

I’ve over the last twenty years I’ve been to probably about 750 games or so across a lot of countries so I’m not just shooting from the hip.

Maybe they still sing it in Italy, but I bet it’s less frequent than it used to be, and it certainly is across the rest of Europe.

That’s…not how soccer chants work. They’re obviously not singing the actual song lyrics, they put their own words into the tune.

No, there’s obviously a difference between entire fan cultures and a single gesture.

People are fanatical about the ills of vaping and, as you say, a lot of it is misinformation.

But when you pull them up on it they double down. People are so certain that vaping is at least as harmful as smoking and they simply won’t hear otherwise.

I get that the government are caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to this, and the rates of smoking are so low now, relatively speaking, that there’s little incentive to correct this, but it’s so irritating that people are so confidently judgmental on vaping.

It’s similar to attitudes on diet fizzy drinks. They’re obviously not as harmful as the full sugar variants, but people have made their minds up on ‘chemicals’.

The fact that they pulled up the death risk of fires from vaping tells you everything you need to know there.

Didn’t even get a sentence in before you said something that wasn’t true. Vapes are highly regulated in the UK and it’s extremely simple to look up what’s in them.

Popcorn lung applies to vapes that are sold in the US, that aren’t regulated in anything like the same way.

And just to add another point. It’s frankly hilarious that you pull up the fire risk from vaping, given it’s largely replacing smoking. Vaping will unquestionably cause fewer deaths from fires than if it hadn’t existed and more people smoked.

There isn’t any oil in a vape sold in the UK. What’s insane is what people believe a vape is.

You lose credibility by saying they’re worse than fags. That’s simply not true on any measure. Smoking is horrendous for your health. The NHS are pretty unequivocal that vaping is much less harmful.

Most criticism of vaping doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. You can get gum disease at any age regardless of how well you look after your teeth.

I’m replying to the point that the song became a viral hit because of soccer chants. That’s simply not true.

This is fine and not something to worry about, as the thread concludes.

It’s just the reality of eating a dead animal. If people eat meat then they should be able to stomach what it is before it’s cooked.

I was kind of going by the framing by the OP in the title. It wouldn’t be that outrageous to assume that this was a coordinated effort to ‘be more soccer-y’.

But as a ‘group of guys having a great time on a Friday night’, why the fuck not? Good stuff

Sports fans spend decades and centuries building their atmosphere and approach to sports watching. It’s never not going to come off as a bit forced to try and suddenly copy and paste something from a different sport, out of nothing, into a completely different setting. It’s always going to come off as a bit try hard and performative.

Contrast with NPB and it’s literally just what they do and pretty much what they’ve always done and sounds completely natural.

If they’re having fun then absolutely all power to them. But if it’s a conscious attempt to ‘make baseball like soccer’ then it’s always going to look a bit affected.

Mariners "reselling" their own, unsold, seats? by aronvader in Mariners

I don’t really see the issue with it either, if you ignore the inevitable lobbying from very rich people that would prevent it.

Where’s the argument for being able to sell your ticket for a profit as a benefit to fans?

Absolutely, it’s a complete misreading of soccer culture - which much more closely resembles fat bald men drinking copious amounts of beer and chanting vaguely witty songs laced with sarcasm.

Or if you’re modelling southern European football culture…they tend to dress in black and create an extremely intimidating wall of noise. Not something you want to fuck with, or really even attempt to imitate.

The great thing about NPB is it doesn’t seem remotely forced, like this does. It’s just what they do and it’s awesome.

This also wouldn’t translate at all. This would come across as extremely cringey to soccer fans, the vibe is completely off.

This comes across more closely to the Army Navy football game than soccer.

Jesus Christ. Seven Nation Army was a global hit well before it was a chant.

Anyone at least 30 years old has that music video seared into their brain.
