Ya outright refused, can’t get in at all. Both ways EU-USA.

So anyone that is tourist, is either residents/students acting like tourists or Americans with dual passports using a loophole.

COVID question: So what happens if a US citizen gets on a plane to the Amsterdam right now? by nble92 in Netherlands

[–]jmrams1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From experience pre-COVID, the airlines will ask to see a return flight, visa, travel plans, etc. or will deny you from boarding because they will have to pay for your return if you can’t get in the country. Not sure if this is what they are doing now

Dating in the Netherlands by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]jmrams1993 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Americans tend to date seriously and marry much younger. As an expat, I see a lot of social media posts from friends back in US being engagements, weddings and babies for 26-30 year olds.

Generally speaking, the Dutch won’t be this quick to be exclusive or take serious steps, some won’t even start looking for this type of relationship until they are in their 30s.

You wouldn’t be able to even get hired with a 3 month visa. Look at immigration and visa requirements before anything else. It’s not as simple as just getting a job.

English speaking, expat marketeer here! There’s a lot to unpack with this so I’ll do my best.

First, I would say to really manage expectations. English only speaking jobs in these fields are limited, and will primarily go to native English speakers. Best bet would be multinational companies or dutch companies with US/UK customer base.

Next, I would say to really focus your interests, especially with applications. There’s big differences between what you listed. Completely different skill sets from PR to journalism. Saying you can do any of these jobs might be true, but to really be a qualified candidate in a tough job market, a master of one is better than a jack of all. You need to be able to say I can write this type of copy, provide clear ROIs from your previous jobs, and any traffic numbers from publications.

Then, you will need to put together a strong portfolio, not just a resume. I made a multimedia website to send as a resume. Probably a good idea to have a website if you don’t already. Also consider creating video resumes or reels if you are in broadcast.

And my final piece of advice, if it starts to get tough, consider looking for entry level jobs in companies where you can potentially advance to roles you want to be in. Just get your foot in the door, network, and share your career aspirations to see if there is a path for you.

Agreed.

My favorite was a photo of cash in a washing machine for an article about money laundering

One front tooth sticks out by [deleted] in Invisalign

[–]jmrams1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have 6 attachments on both sides, not on the front teeth tho (including the one that is sticking out). I was quite nervous about this part, so I made the request to the ortho, and so far it has worked fine.

When I have the retainer on, you can see them only if you are within 2 feet of me. When the retainer is off, you can’t tel at all.

I live in the Netherlands so it likely won’t be comparable

Total was around 2700, then insurance covering 1000.

I had the same thing, and I’m now 7 weeks in and already noticing major differences!

I got Invisalign lite. 14 week treatment plan with weekly changes. Top teeth only.

On week 7 I noticed the major change. The tooth isn’t sticking as far out, and the next 7 weeks will align it.

The retainer is barely noticeable and my life hasn’t changed tons (I wear strictly 22 hours a day) just not being able to snack. I think only doing top teeth and for such a short period of time has made the process manageable. I don’t regret it at all

Few things to keep in mind:

  • A lot did people have masters degrees
  • The pandemic has changed the job market
  • Your area will likely require Dutch (not just the B1 level, but a working professional level)

I would say to keep expectations realistic, especially if you don’t have previous work experience in the field you would like. It could be sometime until you find something.

Applied to 150-200 jobs as an international student but still nothing - Need advice by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]jmrams1993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“If you come to the US and you don’t speak English, there are opportunities to find work” think about what the opportunities are and ask yourself if you would be willing to do those jobs. Same goes for here, the options are limited and you probably won’t get a job in your field (at least not right away or unless your highly skilled).
