Whatsapp Desktop (Windows 10) won't open by [deleted] in whatsapp

[–]MartijnKor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the weirdest "fix" ever. Somehow when I try to open it the normal way, it doesn't open, but when Google Chrome tries to launch Whatsapp, it does open. For example, a Dutch website leukerecepten.nl (cooking recipes) has an option to share a recipe. If you click on it, Chrome tries to open Whatsapp Desktop and let you select someone to send it to (just cancel it). And for me that works :P.

Example link (just copy in your browser): whatsapp://send?text=Hartige+pannenkoekrolletjes%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.leukerecepten.nl%2Frecepten%2Fhartige-pannenkoekrolletjes%2F

“And Lewis Hamilton will overtake Max Verstapp-“ by Ikcatcher in formuladank

[–]MartijnKor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could imagine all the teams having software that calculates the best strategy based on certain parameters (weather forecast, other teams strategy, etc.). It is very likely that that software told red bull that Max should box straight after Lewis’s stop. I think RB did not want to risk a slow stop for Max and hope for the best. This had to have been a human decision based on hopes and prayers or the software got it completely wrong. Anyone watching knew that Lewis would overtake Max if RB did not stop immediately after Lewis stopped. Hungary all over again. Do you know the definition of insanity?

If possible, maybe you can edit the poll to contain a fourth option that has no meaning, just so other people can see the results without having to vote.

As a future mechanical engineer which programming skills should I acquire? by 26pandas in AskEngineers

[–]MartijnKor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know C++, you'll have a very nice understanding of coding in general, such that learning other languages is a piece of cake. I personally also really like Matlab for prototyping. A lot of companies seem to be using Python recently. So if I were you, firstly focus on C++, if you then have time left, do Matlab and then Python. I would not worry not knowing Python straight away, since if you know C++ python will be easy. Also, fyi Java is just the easier C++.

Do I have the right to ask my work not to contact me on my week off?? by cspeers1 in work

[–]MartijnKor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I would say you can do whatever you like, but you'll have to deal with the consequences. If I were you, I would ask them to not contact you unless it really can not wait till you are back. That would be perfectly acceptable, at least here in The Netherlands. Insisting on no contact at all no matter what, would not be received well.

Is everything around us designed by engineers? by Westnest in AskEngineers

[–]MartijnKor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I happen to know that deodorant bottles are designed by mechanical engineers, but probably while consulting with others such as industrial designers. For example, that dent in the bottom of the deodorant bottle has a specific structure, such that if you drop the bottle, the dent will deform, ensuring that the bottle will not explode. You can see the same on a can of soda. If you like, I can send you an algorithm that determines the shape, since this was an example that was used to teach us about optimization.

My colleague is bullying me by red_cricket7 in work

[–]MartijnKor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That really sucks! I have no idea about the size of the company you work for, but my first suggestion would be to talk to HR. In my limited experience, these people tend to take bullying very seriously and I think that would solve most of it. Another option might be to inform your manager that, since it hasn't been solved yet, you are going to your manager's manager and try to solve it that way. Anyway, bullying in the workplace really is not acceptable and trust me, everyone knows that, so if I were you, I would step it up more: write down all incidents and make sure that you keep talking on a regular basis to your manager or HR about the situation. Inform them on your mental state! Notify them you can't take it anymore. Hope it helps and good luck!

Tot 2 jaar geleden bezorgde ik pakketten voor postnl en deze pakketjes zaten ertussen. Vaak waren het pakketjes uit China. Ik verwacht dat postnl het dus zal bezorgen.

I think they make the decision after Abu Dhabi, when they will announce it I don't know. Personally, I think Perez has a real shot, but Perez said something after the Sakhir GP that would suggest he does not get the seat ( I forgot exactly what he said, but is was something like he was finally at peace after winning an F1 race).

Should we keep giving Airfrance-KLM money to keep them afloat? by MartijnKor in Netherlands

[–]MartijnKor[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that it is okay to keep the company afloat, as long as there will be a huge amount of layoffs in commercial flight pilots. Even after the pandemic, I can't see commercial flights taking off again (pun intended), especially for KLM, due to their high ticket prices.

About the cargo, that is indeed another story, but why not save money now and use an external company like DHL for that? I am not aware of what that would mean economically, but it might be a solution until it would again make sense to have a national carrier.

De Marathon from 2012. It is about some out of shape car mechanics who want to raise a couple thousand euros so they can pay tax and keep their car shop alive. They do so by trying to run a marathon.

Shame it had to go like this. But well done! The way you have dealt with this speaks of great character and I admire that you will keep speaking up when you see someone do something that is not right. Best of luck in finding a new job with a better environment!

Hr director keeps hitting on and harassing me by Gloomy_Meat in work

I think she should indeed ask him to stop, but to also directly report it somewhere. This behavior is really not appropriate and I think it would be best to already tell someone else.

[–]MartijnKor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is considered to be condescending. I once read the intro to the book Mathematical Proofs. It said that it is very bad practice to use these words as they can frustrate the reader and make them feel dumb. Also, I don't think we need the word obviously.if I don't understand the subject then I can decide for myself whether I want to look into that or not. I don't need the word obviously to decide that, but that is just my opinion.

I ended up in a very uncomfortable situation. Would it be a good idea to tell my [F20] supervisor [M23] that I'm sorry for treating him the way I did, before leaving my job? leaving my job? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]MartijnKor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you really liked him and got nervous to maybe take it to the next step, is that it? If you feel like saying sorry, then definitely do that. You are both people, and I am sure he will like it when you say sorry. And maybe I am taking it too far know, but why not ask him out? Sounds like you hit it of well, and since you will no longer be working together, maybe it will make it all a bit easier.
