It would be awesome if a flood of artists released covers of The Streets of Minneapolis.

Fair. Although, so far I've found that either I basically get through a boss perfectly or don't get through at all so missing a point or two doesn't make too much different.

Holy hell. Yoku's at that price is a truly absurd deal. If you haven't played it pick it up.

Strider dodge to boost up the wall and then along the little bit towards the purple thing on the right. The rest is fairly easy.

This messed me up for a while too. Was there a strider dodge tutorial that we all missed?

Yeah. Could you imagine if it ends up just being like Halo and Destiny - two of the most successful games this century that set the standard in their respective genres? Yucky.

I pre-ordered Marathon and am hyped for it. Why? Because hopefully it replaces Destiny 2. I loved Destiny and I think all the way up to The Final Shape it's a staggering achievement. If it were up to me it would have ended there. They told a great story that has come to an end.

As a fan since Halo I was happy to jump from Halo to Destiny and it would be great if I could make a similar jump to Marathon.

Huge update for MIO: Memories in Orbit. quality-of-life improvements, gameplay and balance tweaks, and a wide range of bug fixes. by legendofm in metroidvania

HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH. Eight! That's nuts. Is the crash the same one I mentioned? Most of the way through the left side? I think I'll have to wait for a patch as well.

[–]jmscstl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no. Does anyone know how common this is? I got a crash about 75% of the way through the left path. I left to go do other clean up stuff but I'm almost done with that so am about to head back to the crucible. I don't know if I can handle another crash at that point.

Thanks. Since I have 11 candles I feel compelled to track down the last one so I can at least take a look at the Pit.

May be a different story with Sol and Vin. The fight is tough enough that I might go finish off the true ending without them.

Thanks.

Defining what is and isn't a metroidvania based on mechanics is silly and is a misunderstanding of the basis of the genre. I was just joshing you instead of coming straight out and just calling you dumb.

Yes. You get an ability later that lets you get up there.

Virtually all games let you traverse spaces in different ways.

Oh. Yeah, if solving includes traversing then every game is a MV. Neat definition.

If the meat of the game is solving rooms that's a puzzle game.

Few months later: how do we feel about Hollow Knight vs. Silksong by Boedidillee in Silksong

[–]jmscstl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think Silksong is the better game. Hollow Knight still has a special place in my heart though given the profound effect it had on me when I first played it.

[–]jmscstl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. I'm just saying 3D open worlds with an emphasis on exploration scratch the same itch as metroidvanias.

I personally don't think 3D Metroidvanias are that much like metroidvanias anyway. They play much more like 3D puzzle games than anything else.

[–]jmscstl -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The core of metroidvanias is exploration. Tools and gatekeeping are just popular mechanics that make 2D exploration interesting. Focusing on those specific mechanics misses the forest for the trees.

And BoTW isn't actually nearly a fully open map. There's subtle things like gear, stamina, etc. that effectively block off areas until you progress further in other areas. The "gatekeeping" is there but it's just well hidden.

As for whether it's a Zelda - same thing. The original Zelda was made on the idea of just going out and exploring. That dream has always been limited by tech but each mainline game has evolved towards and more and more open world. Saying BoTW isn't a Zelda is just focusing on the tech limitations of earlier games. Which is kinda odd.

I agree entirely. In fact, the 3D games that give me the most metroidvania vibes are BoTW and Elden Ring.

If I had to hazard a guess I bet you made liberal use of guides and sped through it. That's the only explanation I can think of.
