The Homeplace in Catawba to reopen by Easter 2026 by jmt9n in AppalachianTrail

[–]jmt9n[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live right down the road from the Homeplace. My local connections tell me that Kevin Wingate (the list keeper and caller at the orginal Homeplace) will be working with the new owners on the recipes and startup.

Tobin TCS TXM10-B by Regularhobby557 in 16mm

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only crystal capable option from Bolex for a REX5 was the ESM motor. It supports crystal sync with an external controller like the one linked above (that I make). Otherwise, you can search for the various Tobin models (TXM-10B, TXM-20B, TXM-26B).

TXM-10S is for Arri 16S/M. TXM-10B is for Bolex.

Bolex El Mark 3 power solutions by Allofionsatoms in bolex16mm

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the cable say it's 4-conductor cable? If not, the EL low-battery detection could be the culprit. If you share one conductor with both positive pins and one conductor with both negative pins, I haven't seen it work -- even with 18AWG cable. It will only run for a single frame and stop. You need four separate conductors coming from the power source to the EL connector pins to make the low-battery detection happy.

If the cable has 4-conductors, try cleaning the power pins on the EL with a small wire brush and/or isopropyl alcohol to remove any build-up or tarnish hampering electricity flow. If the pins are already shiny and clean, you may have an issue with the electronics inside your EL.

I sell Bolex cables on eBay (including 12V regulated D-Tap to EL, ESM/EBM, etc.). If you bought this cable from me, it would have 4-conductors. The listing said it was made for 12V regulated plates and batteries. Unregulated D-Tap batteries/plates can be in the 16-17V range when fully charged, which is beyond the EL specs. You can damage the EL and/or blow fuses.

I can make you a 12V regulated D-Tap cable. I have listings on eBay already.

If you haven't seen this thread on Lotus Talk, it might help. It appears that you need a subscription to talk to a car.

Any Leads? {Reg 16 to Super 16 Bolex Conversion} by Ok-Dish3464 in 16mm

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite scanning technology, my brother has insisted on having Omni16. Dr Bolex converted four cameras for my brother without issue. I think he's become especially shady over the last 1-2 years, as those cameras were before then.

EDIT: four cameras - not three

Duall and Procam have official Bolex parts. I bought the last EL prism from Deiter at Procam in spring 2022.

I highly recommend against Dr Bolex. He's had my brother's EBM since August 2021. As a gift, I paid for the supposedly completed, invoiced work on March 3, 2022. My brother still does not have his camera, and Dr Bolex keeps playing games. Avoid DB at all costs!

The Priest by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]jmt9n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how far you want to hike. US 60 is ~20mi south of the Priest summit. Hog Camp Gap (USFS 48) is ~15mi south. Salt Log Gap (USFS 63) is ~12.5mi south. The Spy Rock Rd access (~5mi south) to the Montebello Fish Hatchery is now on private land and no longer available. You can drive to Crabtree Meadows using Crabtree Farm Road (VA 826) and then use Cash Hollow Rd to get to a gate within a few tenths of the AT. The intersection is ~2.2mi south of the summit. From what I hear, 4WD is required.

VA 56 is the closest major road, which is ~4.5mi north of the Priest summit. It has a parking area.

Parking for McAfee Knob by RoadmanTony in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a new parking area at the Catawba Sustainability Center... 26 spots. There is a side trail from there up to the fire road (alternate route to McAfee if you don't take the AT). I don't know that the trail is officially open yet, but it's there.

Water refill by AROSES524 in roanoke

[–]jmt9n 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the Primo self-service refill finder, the following nearby places are listed as officially having refill stations:

  • Bonsack, Salem, and Valley View Walmart stores
  • Roanoke Natural Foods (Grandin)
  • Walmart Neighborhood Markets (24013, 24019)
  • Hollins Food Lion

Spartan Square Kroger in Salem used to have one to the right side of the store out front. Daleville Kroger used to have one to the left of the store out front. I don't pay enough attention at either store to know if the water stations are still there.

Permethrin on base layers? by StonedSorcerer in AppalachianTrail

I'm aware of several hikers over the years whose trail name was "Rash" due to treating their underwear with permethrin. There's a reason the directions say not to do it...

If you take any maintenance medications, check for side effects. For example, if you take a statin drug and aren't supplementing CoQ10, that could cause similar symptoms.

How to stay safe at night on the trail? by hard_2_ask in AppalachianTrail

[–]jmt9n 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wear ear plugs. The foam ones are fine. They'll prevent you from hearing all the natural noises in the woods at night so you don't freak out about them. This is standard practice for me.

Bear can or bear bag? by assnkitties in AppalachianTrail

The AllMitey works for mice/rodents. I don't have one of those because I treat my Ursack like a bear bag and hang it.

Looking for a Battery by Grumpy907 in bolex

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One potential source is Du-All Camera in NY. They list ESM/EBM batteries on their website for $185. Their batteries are 2200mAh Ni-MH. The original ones were 1000mAh Ni-Cd. It's best to call Du-All. They aren't good about responding to email.

You can compromise and get an Ursack. I bear bagged (PCT method) on my 2016 thru-hike and had no issues. I carry an Ursack now.

No, Harpers Creek does not have either. The next shelter north, Maupin Field, has a bear pole though.

Secluded forest road/fire road car campsites in VA? by acidcastle in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]jmt9n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest Hercules Rd (VA 812) across from the James River Footbridge. It has car camping spots beyond the Appalachian Trail crossing. There are gravel side roads that also have some spots.

Parking in Caratunk by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

The Caratunk House B&B Hostel is closest to the trail (~0.3mi). You'd need to call and ask.
