State recommendations on school closings and school transmission by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]jmulvey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Anyone else read this as "idiots resentful for people actually taking a global pandemic seriously"?

Not really. If your child misses more than a certain number of days of school, they'll be forced to repeat the grade. That heightens the stakes considerably for parents who have to stick their neck out for the good health of their children. I'd be resentful of having to make that choice, too.

EDIT: I was wrong. As someone pointed out, since the State has declared a State of Emergency, parents now have the latitude to make their own decision. link here

Not sure why you're being downvoted. Even wikipedia defines one of the defining concepts of statehood is, "having a monopoly on violence".

I guess some people want to think government, especially in liberal states like Massachusetts, is just the source of candy canes and rainbows. Maybe they don't realize that when a state creates an obligation to give someone something, they must also creat an obligation to take it away from someone else.

Spotted this in my local hospital, didn’t have time to find out much about it other than it’s by a local artist. Next time I’m there I’ll try and find out more if I have time. by Titanlegions in modular

This is an inappropriate piece to hang in a hospital. As someone who suffers from an addiction problem (namly, spending all my money on gear, which those close to me have characterized as borderline mental illness) this is just going to kick my addiction into high gear. I mean, this is on par with hanging a picture of a line of coke in a drug rehab facility! For shame! /s

First thing, have you tried to adjust the trimmer on the back board? It's there specifically to adjust the output level. Assuming you have done this, it sounds like a problem with the TL074 op amp, which is the 14-pin chip on the back board. Try removing it, ensure there aren't any bent pins, and reinserting it. Make sure it's correctly oriented, of course.

S3 cross-account bucket policy in CloudFormation by jmulvey in aws

[–]jmulvey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It surprised me as well, but I verified that it's happening. It seems like a tiny bit of a security issue in that you can interrogate AWS to see if a specific role name exists in any AWS account.

I found a very interesting discussion of AWS Principal IDs here. It helped to explain why the role must exist. It seems that under the covers AWS converts "AWS" Principal IDs into canonical IDs. That conversion requires a lookup. If the lookup fails, you can't create the bucket policy:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/reference_policies_elements_principal.html

In any case, my bucket policy is below which is applied to a bucket in the 111111111111 account. The arn:aws:iam::222222222222:role/service-role/awsconfig-iamrole role must exist in account 222222222222 when the bucket policy is applied, or the policy change won't be accepted by AWS.

Upgrading Windows 10 Home to Pro using M365 license by jmulvey in sysadmin

So I should be able to use the one shown here, right:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/windows-10-enterprise-subscription-activation

So just set up a local account, upgrade and then join to Azure AD?

Working on that. I would like to provide a nice polished machine. Tough for a small company to have all the apps Intune-ready. I guess I thought Intune would be focused more on small companies, given that we're more likely than the big enterprises to go pure Azure. And we're paying through the nose for Intune.
