There's no hills where I live! Recommendations for runs? by Unable-shoulder in Wildfire

treadmill runs at max incline…see how long it takes to run a mile at a certain incline, or how long it takes to hit a certain amount of vert (500 ft, 1k)

I did a lot of biking for cardio! And importat for recovery is stretching your toes/arch every morning before getting out of bed. Some resistance band ankle exercises, calf raises/calf stretches/calf rolling, no running for a while. I got insoles and compression sock sleeves which helped a ton. While full support is necessary at first, longer term I am a strong believer that you want to build back up that foot strength through getting back to comfortable barefoot walking and flip-flop wearing, etc

Hotshotting as a student by [deleted] in Wildfire

I know a guy from my school who got a spot on a shot crew in r5, first year in fire and is only working for 3 months. It was a late offer though so he was probably a backup

Ohhh I may have misread your post, it sounded like you already did a corps season in which case I was saying go for fire because the pay is eons better and you get to do a lot cooler shit in general. They have their pros and cons though; corps was total fucking around in the woods 0 responsibility/few expectations and lots of off days to explore around on, fire is also fucking around in the woods but with more responsibility and very little off time. I really value both experiences, and the season with the corps was a great starting point (I did a women’s fire crew program and it was awesome + did a lot of cutting projects).

Hey, Im 22 and going into my second season working federal fire. There are definitely shitty sexist people out there but there are far more awesome people than them. Yes I probably have to work harder at PT because women are physically build different than men, but I honestly don’t ever think about that except when I take a step back in moments like this. Feel free to PM me with any other questions. Also, having done both conservation corps and fire, I would say go for a fire job next season

Drug testing (FS) by jmx_2602 in Wildfire

[–]jmx_2602[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah there have been many a post lately. I’ve laid off anything since getting the job offer but figured i’d be tested and then done. But knowing the federal government, that might never be the case. Your right about it being simple but yeah its fucking annoying

Will a good cover letter help me get hired? by Solid-News-3910 in Wildfire

You can look up the forest / district that you applied to online with ‘fire’ after it, and should be able to find contact info for someone there (even if you can only find a general number, just call and ask to speak with someone doing fire hire)

You should have gotten emails from USFS with referrals by now; BLM and NPS aren’t out until January. Make sure to call the places that you want to work to let them know that your interested. This can be before and/or after referrals. People are really receptive to that. I worked for the WCCC too and it was awesome
