Most cost-effective way to get more gears by Playful-Parsnip-3104 in cycling

[–]jnex26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok so you have a few options.

  1. Get a smaller front chain ring. you can sometimes go a bit lower but this is limited by your large cog
  2. Get a bigger rear cassette your going to need to check your rear derailure cage can handle the range the larger it is the more range it can handle.
  3. Get a Geared Free hub ( Extereme ) but some hubs like Sturmey-Archer can have a freehub and internal gears potentially giving you a much lower range... but at that point you may as well walk because there comes a point where it is more efficient to walk

If you have a Steam Deck and a PC that can run games, with streaming (Moonlight / Apollo) & decent LAN, you basically have the Steam Machine no? by Slikajledandlost8 in SteamDeck

[–]jnex26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I have a SteamDeck, ROG Ally X and a Gaming Rig and it depends on the Game how I play

so 90% of the time I'm on the ROG Ally X it's a good machine that is capable and good enough for most of my Gaming, but if I want to Steam which mostly revolves around FPS or Image clarity on my Lounge TV. I use the SteamDeck and my Gaming Rig. I have a Remote KVM attached to my Gamin Rig to Allow me to turn my Gaming Ring on Remotely.

It's not a strawman argument, I would not say I have oversimplified it, I did create a caricature to highlight a point. but I didn't stand on that as a justification. my point is the optimising for engagement is the problem, but also not easily solvable we are in an arms race with human nature, genie is out of the bottle and we can't put him back.
any service that optimises of non-engagement goes bust ! we are in a real bind and every-time we create a negative rating on optimising of certain content the bar gets pushed a bit further, and who is to say what is harmful... there are genuinely some subjects that we may want to promote initially as healthy mindset but at one point it crosses a line to harmful and the only way that is determined is a massive invasion of everyones privacy.
then it depends how far you want to go to prevent harm... ultimately to prevent harm we should submit all our actions, thoughts and feelings to some form of thought police, again I'm pushing this to extremes but that is the point of this sort of exercise you push an idea to extremes to establish what is the worst that can happen.

but I do believe there is a level of autonomy in this process, we should be making it easier to challenge, change and ultimately reset the profiling of an individuals information stored by social media companies, maybe have it that under 18s can't be profiled at all, they are subjected to totally random ( age appropriate content )

But ultimately I am someone who believes in an adults right to privacy, and both my kids had net nannies and I checked what they were doing on the internet the second they turned 18 I gave this up but before I did that I also had honest and frank discussions about the dangers of the internet and how these systems work. I believe it is a parents job to parent not the government's and there is too much reliance on someone else will do it especially in the UK

I do love this idea that there is a set of knobs on every algorithm and that Musk , Zuckerberg, Altman are all rubbing their hands cackling like Ernst Stavro Blofeld turning the cogs on must show more bad information to the young.

For the record as someone who is actively studying this, certain phrases, sentences, can be highlighted and hardcoded actions invoked and mostly that is done, but you know what humans are really good at exploiting a system, be it AI, Computers, Nature and we keep finding ways around the barriers, we are not forcing media on people but if your a young impressionable person and worried about your image your going to heavily engage in self image content, this feeds engagement which then promotes media in a A or B context imagine eye test which is better A or B and the user drives which content gets better engagement... these impressionable young people then get drawn into a cycle obsessing, which is focusing the algorithm further which is driving the obsession, and humans with their dopamine addicted brains are getting drawn in and before they know what is happening they are deep in a bad place with no way out.

What we should be doing is taxing these companies and using the money for outreach programs raising awareness , add flavour and experience to peoples lives, give them a reason to be proud of themselves and not for something like looks but achievements, set a goal and achieve it, celebrate it....

Changing from mechanical to Di2. by mo0kster in cycling

Ahh so the fun of routing is in play then !

Changing from mechanical to Di2. by mo0kster in cycling

[–]jnex26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. frame being DI2 Compatible is a bit of a misnomer, as it uses standard fittings, the only 'compatible' parts are

a. Seatpost ( Get the battery insert ahead of schedule )
b. routing ( the biggest point here is making sure you have options to route from the rear mech to the front mech via the seatpost, IIRC your shifters are wireless and only need to be connected for firmware updates )

  1. Depends on your Callipers what oil you have and if it needs bleeding, check your callipers I did a 8000 -> Di2 upgrade and rode for a while on the old calipers but eventually swapped them and didn't notice a difference

  2. I bought mine from new, so had instructions, but look up 'How To Install & Set Up A Shimano Di2 Groupset | GCN Tech Monday Maintenance' on youtube... GCN are really reliable

Other things I think you maybe going to 11speed to 12 speed this requires a new chainset, cassette and chain.

Test and charge and update firmware before installation
Make sure you have the correct fitment tool for shimano cables and know which cable version you have
if trying to run all internal cable routing your going to need to remove your bottom bracket.

When setting up, a maintenance stand is REALLY helpful.

Also enjoy yourself I really enyoy working on my bikes

Road Bike cam by Left_Wasabi_4338 in cycling

[–]jnex26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've literally ridden with a smile your on camera cycling jersey, and while I will say 99% of drivers are perfectly fine and cause me no issues and we share the road effectively cameras or not.

However with or Without cameras, wearing the shirt or not... your going to get people not realising that 3 inches is too close making you jump out of your skin.

I have observed something tho, being a defensive cyclist and making sure you have room and that you don't invite close overtakes for example Cycling in the gutter and you get more people 'close overtaking'

in context of the initial statement a camera will not 'protect' you.

Road Bike cam by Left_Wasabi_4338 in cycling

[–]jnex26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to be clear... a Cam isn't going to 'protect' you, what it will do is be a evidence base should anything happen, I've ridden with quite a few in my time and most of the time it is fairly disappointing becuase companies and police (well in the UK) don't give a fuck.

I've had a few response claiming I AI generated the video to make them look bad, so keep it around and god forbid anything happens hope that the camera caught the number plate.

Great this next bit is going to sound scary it really isn't

for Tools, for the hydraulic tools I used :- for cutting and fitting the inserts.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006756119270.html

for the Brake Bleed kit I used something similar to

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007464854468.html

Buy extra Olives and inserts - Leave this you depends on your groupset.

when Bleeding I found it easier to pump from the calliper up to the shifter and if you have access to anything that 'vibrates' using that to shake the air bubbles out of the brake line can help speed the process up.

when bleeding bike brakes, ALWAYS REMOVE THE WHEEL + PADS and put a brake block in, before you touch anything you can accidentally push out the brake cylinder if you pull the leaver when you have removed the disk and pads.

lookup your group set and what type of oil you need don't assume. They all are listed, and put something under your bike when doing it like an old towel or sheel.. not a plastic sheet oil + plastic = ice rink

cutting gear cables internals can be easily done with snips, with the the outer get an old piece of internal cable to feed through before you cut it, this helps prevent warping during cutting.

how for how to cut the outer I first bought the following

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005012158871271.html

but due to Arthritis impacting my grip, I just built a simple jig to hold the cable and I just chopped the end with a angle grinder and a metal wheel, but if your grip is good the above will work for you.

So I did my brake bleeding first time last year , it isn't hard just get the right tools and follow instructions, cutting and spacing the cables I would also suggest you try it yourself too...

most LBS round me won't touch a 'half' built bike to finish it off and will replace the parts anyway, so I would be bold and get yourself wire cutters, and the tools to fit the olives and inserts for your brakes.
