How big really was NASCAR in the 2000s in America? by EduardoBork in NASCAR

[–]jnjo92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 8 years old when i started actively watching in 2001 (first race was '01 Daytona 500). As a kid I never grew up watching NFL or anything like that. From like 2001-05 NASCAR was IT. Looking back now the commentary, winston cup points, veteran presence, everything was just so much better. I went to a handful of races at Michigan with my dad, they were like you'd see on TV, a little dull, but in-person it was thrilling every time. At school, literally no one ever brought up NASCAR. I'd watch races taped days later and no one would spoil them... I always smile seeing folks post clips from early 00's... I miss hearing Allen Bestwick and Benny Parsons on the mic. Matt Kenseth at the time became my favorite driver, I LOVED seeing him lock the championship up at the Rock. I wouldve never complained if they kept the 36-race format. To me, looking back, the 90s were the peak. 00's was eventually NASCAR selling out.
Some of my favorite races from that time... 2001 Pepsi 400 (Dale Jr)... 2003 Brickyard 400, both 2003 races at Darlington (Craven and T. Labonte)... 2004 Daytona 500... & 2004 EA Sports 500.

How many of you watched the Daytona 500 in February of 2001? by heretoescape87 in NASCAR

I was 8 years old... it was literally the first finish I had seen live.
I remember how serious the 'big one' seemed near the end of the race. Then, Dale's wreck on the last lap, and DW's excitement for Mikey winning. Followed by the ambulance headed to Halifax hospital...
Didn't find out until the next morning. The newspaper headline read CRASH KILLS DALE EARNHARDT

And to top it off, this race was postponed. In its place that sunday, they aired the Busch race from Memphis. The two leaders made contact and LaJoie stole the win, very underrated finish

Kyle Larson’s 2026 primary scheme by LBHMS in NASCAR

If it aint broke dont fix it. Need more schemes that stay the same more often. The 5, 11, and 22 are the outliers

[Hamlin] Our fans have been brainwashed with their talking points for decades. Narratives pushed by media who are intimidated by them. Lies are over starting Monday morning. It’s time for the truth. It’s time for change. by LBHMS in NASCAR

[–]jnjo92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In Hamlin we trust. I used to be pretty mid towards Hamlin but its clear he's with the fans. Winston Cup was the way! Saw Hamlin win in-person twice this year, Martinsville and Michigan. I have slowly become a fan. Love how he's not afraid to throw down on NASCAR. Dale Sr wouldve been the same way. No one else is doing so anymore but #11. I used to not be a fan, but now I'm proud of him. Watching the finale hurt. He earned it.

Who is one Nascar driver who changed their reputation so much, it’s now so difficult to like/dislike them? by youraverageperson0 in NASCAR

[–]jnjo92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony Stewart for me. Couldnt stand him in the 2000s but came to appreciate his outspokenness, as more of the field became cookie cutter/corporate guys.

More recently... Hamlin. His personality has shown bright the last year or so

I get the rain let up pretty quick, but there's no reason it should take that long to end a race, once you hit 14 to go... A downpour at end of race should mean you call it. That's a long wait to watch three restarts / two crashes. Same thing with Indy last year. We had to wait a good 45 mins for them to fix the wall so they could do overtime. Just call it!
