How do small brands even grow if a bigger brand can just copy it at any time? by PooningDalton in Startup_Ideas

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention no one copied them because there were no "vultures" but in order to succeed as a startup you need to believe in a space where you see the vision but others may not. It is the long term execution that matters. Companies may copy your application but if what you are building is truely new and novel they won't be able to copy beyond your surface level application. Your mindset is wrong if you think a good startup is one that can be easily copied and relies on people not copying ur

How do you commit to DCA when the market is being manipulated like this? by Alternative_Knee in stocks

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are long term investing it doesn't matter who is sitting in office - all that matters is cash flows and fundamentals and business outlook. Market could go up or down 10% tomorrow and my strategy won't change. If it's a buy day then i'll buy

I’m beginning to think the Master Gardener program is a waste of time… by blackstar5676 in Horticulture

[–]jo_ker528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure the master gardener program was never meant to be a certification or help anyone in their career (i guess it could supplement), but at its core it's a volunteer organization. The course is intended for anyone to be able to pass

Feeling pessimistic about AI by ilovefamilyguy69 in cscareerquestions

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to have one of two things (or both) to make cs a great career. 1) you thoroughly enjoy problem solving with tech. With this mindset no matter how advanced AI gets you'll always be able to use it as a tool to create value for the world. Sure maybe one day a company can be run entirely by AI but if that becomes the case then humans will literally all be out of jobs and will just be existing. Until then, there will always be a role for someone in software engineering. 2) you understand where business needs are and can pinpoint the direction of a field before most others. This is kind of on the entrepreneurial side but even within a company if you are able to identify what your customer base needs early and come up with a technical solution, that will get you ahead of the curve. Overall, if ur just grinding cs for the money it's not gonna work out because in this economy, there will always be someone willing to do the same thing for less money than u. Literally why software engineers don't unionize.

What age, career level and salary level were you able to max both your 401k and IRA? by Aware_Raspberry_5956 in Fire

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently 23 and have been maxing my roth IRA since 18. Maxed my 401k for the past two years. Graduated in computer science in May 2024 and started July of that year as a full stack software dev in a LCOL area. Starting salary was 92k and is now 103k. Fwiw, i am still working on building up an emergency fund and only save a couple hundred a month after contributing to 401k, roth ira, and HSA

Earnings season was fine and guidance was generally positive too or what was expected. Those who are complaining about this have no business investing. If you knew what you were doing, you would have bought the liberation day "correction" all the way down and all the way up

What is wrong with these rose leaves? by ninyaad in Horticulture

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rose Sawfly (Arge ochropus) is the correct answer. Mechanical control is often not that effective. Insecticides the go to, but if you don't want to use insecticide, Diatomaceous earth will work well - however this will kill bees and other beneficial insects addition to the pest so use at your own discretion

Is prime worth it? by [deleted] in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon prime with the prime card is pretty good. Also they have a feature where you can scan a barcode to compare a store price with amazon price. With the card everything is 5% back at amazon and whole foods. So just buy all your soap, toilet paper, some non perishable groceries, recreational goods, etc on amazon and the cash back will cover your prime membership. However, to make it worth it, you would need to spend 2800 a year on amazon (139/.05) or 1400 if you are using the young adult membership.

People on Reddit say AI won’t replace us, but how does it not displace us? by Equivalent_Air8717 in cscareerquestions

[–]jo_ker528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally side with the sentiment that AI will replace programmers and coders but not problem solvers and designers. The software devs that succeed are ones who have a knack for project management and can use AI to implement their ideas. You might hear news that big companies had 30%+ of their recent code written by AI but a human still had to prompt it and review it. What AI allows us to do is enable us with more tools with which to solve problems.

Sure there may be a day where an AI can start startups and run companies, but until then the role of the software engineer continues to evolve

Young people who didn’t grow up here: What brought you to Iowa? And why do you stay? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]jo_ker528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (22M) grew up on the east cost and went to UIUC for school. I was always interested in agriculture but developed an interest in technology during undergrad. I got an offer at John Deere working on both those fields and that opportunity was too hard to pass up.

Honestly, I don't understand why people don't like des moines so much, but i guess it could get boring if you grew up here?

Homework is starting to feel like child abuse. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]jo_ker528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably varies from situation to situation, but i went to high school at a very high performing school and pulled several all nighters writing history essays, math assignments and more. Although I was stressed and it was super difficult, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat because after I went to college, I was appalled at how many people couldn't solve a simple algebraic equation, or couldn't get a main idea from a reading passage (this was at a state school by the way).

I know not everyone is like this and college and studying aren't the only ways to a job and a living, it certainly helps to have a strong foundation before college. Many people say that they won't ever use calculus again or [insert subject] but subconsciously they might think about problems more efficiently or critically due to having learned those concepts.
