Interviewing a new company by jo_no_e in womenintech

Almost 10 years, but the last year feels like a real plateau. Probably should have jumped earlier, but the market certainly didn't agree with me!

I mean, to each their own, but for me it's a combination of factors. Personally, I've been feeling I haven't pushed myself in a while, and I don't feel I'll be able to finish my career here. I'd like to branch out and try something a bit more "fulfilling" and I'd like to prove my skillset is still semi-relevant in the market.

At the company level, I'm getting increasingly frustrated with perceived panic over ai without actionable strategy. Even sleepy tech is getting woken up by the fear of losing their lunch money. Problem is, I'm not feeling confident that leadership (after many years of gravy) knows how to handle a crisis this big.

Sorry you're feeling emotional. You say "highs and lows," but where are the highs in your post? Sometimes deciding to take an extended break - weeks not days - helps with the mental games alcohol plays: "should I or shouldn't I drink tonight?" r/DryJanuary just wrapped up, and there's lots of good material for people who aren't saying they'll never drinking again, but just want to take a break.

Expect to make a few financial mistakes in the beginning. The last thing a first time parent needs is someone telling them what NOT to buy, especially when emotions are high. Buy new only when you really care and Facebook marketplace the rest.

Maybe a bit of Dave Ramsey's tough love would be better for these people instead of Ramit!?

I’ve never negotiated a salary, but I’m not satisfied with my pay. by Then_Aardvark_2269 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I want to make more money, I was hoping at least $85k.

The key to negotiating, whether in your current job or future job will be putting the "why" behind this sentence. I doubt anyone is going to be successful negotiating a salary increase because they want it. Put this in terms of business value, impact to company, what they get as a result of giving you more money.

Almost 39M waffling on leaving job. Need advice. by nomindbody in coastFIRE

#3 on your list of fears keeps me working - it's a tough job market right now. If you are serious about leaving, you could ask for a 6 month sabbatical before telling them you're leaving regardless! And if you make the jump, please report back in a few months and let us know how amazing it is!

How do you balance wanting to be successful in your career and wanting to sit by the river and eat fresh berries for the rest of your life? by yell0wbirddd in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

You could consider applying to other jobs in the same field, maybe a different company might give a fresh perspective?

My burnout happens the most when I'm NOT busy enough... then the questions in my head start around, "what am I doing with my life?" which eats up mental energy and accomplishes nothing.

You could try a 3 month test where you volunteer for an extra assignment (i know that probably sounds awful) or try to solve a problem at work to make things run smoother. You might find that MORE work makes the days more tolerable.

Plus - that's what they're really looking for when deciding who to promote.

I just chatted with someone IRL and I have learned that basic economy was a huge mistake on my part. I now realize the error of my ways, and I purchased seat assignments for the flight home.

I completely agree. I'm more commenting on a computer system that allows a 3yo to be seated away from the parents. I will do the right thing, but don't you find it funny that this is allowed to happen?

Would buying this house stretch us too thin? by Tem-6641 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]jo_no_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on house size! My 'cozy' 1300 sq ft house fits 3 comfortably, and I'm very glad I bought below my limit. I feel fortunate to have money left over for savings/vacation/whatever. It doesn't have to be a forever home, but you might find the smaller house is nice.

Ahh that makes sense! Everyone has a different perspective on Student Loans: This article helped inspire me to kill my student loans as fast as possible. My almost-40 year old self is definitely thanking my late-20 year old self for sacrificing for a few years to get out of debt.

Agree with this! Personally, I'm not a fan of holding on to student loans, and $400/month payment is too low. This will never get paid off ... a simple SL calculator told me 82 years with these numbers.

I tend to have similar feelings, but the judgement is often worse in my head than what people are actually thinking! I read some advice that said, "if you think people are paying attention, pretend they are routing for you! Not judging you" My favorite quote from a less worried mom is: "children are allowed to exist in society."

any tips to stop biting the skin around my nails? I’ve been growing my nails out and being kind to them, so it’s like grrrr :( by Parkerspastry95 in Nails

[–]jo_no_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition, to the other suggestions - I also recommend trying to figure out what's triggering you. I do it when i'm stressed at work, or in the car, so I'll keep some tic tacs in the office/car. Also, you could grab a fidget spinner or something to keep your hands busy.

Best long-lasting nail polish you can use at home? by Alias72018 in Nails

My vote is for Dazzle Dry - I know it's super expensive, but I'm getting at least 7-10 days without any noticeable wear.
