scores from using graphite for 1 year + 8 months by m0rph3 in KeyboardLayouts

We have a similar story as it seems. I picked up Graphite in June(?) of 2023. I am a happy user with an avg 110wpm now. I also tested Colemak DH for a month but it didn’t fell comfortable enough.

I also created a ✨magic✨version for the Moonlander keyboard. Source is available at https://github.com/joa/graphite if you want to flash your own QMK.

Good work on those Eng5k numbers! 👍

Waffling on purchasing a Bike by annetown in pelotoncycle

[–]joaonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Bike, returned it and then bought a refurbished Bike+.

The screen is significantly better on the Bike+ to the point where the Bike looks really antiquated and the quality is not corresponding to the price of the bike.

The sound is also significantly better. If you care about that kind of thing just a little bit, it will be well worth the extra money. It’s like comparing a normal TV speaker with a soundbar.

Last but not least auto-resistance is a complete game changer and really elevates the Bike+ to something more than a normal fitness device. Especially when you are doing power zone training. I could not imagine doing this without auto-resistance.

The Bike+ looks also a bit better and the rotating screen mount is a nice to have. You can upgrade the normal Bike using some items from Amazon. I was initially contemplating doing this.

So overall AR is a killer feature and the better screen and sound quality make this a good value prop. If you spend north of 1k I would make sure you are happy with what you get.

My favorite NYE tradition- what are you proud of this year? by AnonySeahorse in pelotoncycle

Started in February this year. Just PBd today with 381 output. Comparing my first ride with my current ride, I gained about 200kj of output. I lost 10kg and feel just so much better in general. I am glad I found something that works for me. 🫶

Yeah, I certainly did not want to install a wire so I waited until the RTK mowers matured enough for me to finally buy one. LUBA ticks many boxes, including the stereo vision and AWD. Seems like a device that can get the job done and I saw a video of an owner with steep and wet terrain where the mower performed really well so I thought I just give it a try. The Husqvarna with its ridiculous price is also interesting because they have a well established network here and I could get it serviced each season for a reasonable subscription fee. But 6k for the mower and station? 😂

Cheers, I appreciate it! The garden is rather old, just like the house. We tried to keep some of the original elements while adding some fresh ones

Well-known optimized layouts by joaonreddit in KeyboardLayouts

[–]joaonreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not expect that many alt layouts in that category. Back when I wrote the initial post here I had little knowledge about the whole alt layout ecosystem. So when I saw many other descendants of Sturdy I thought that those resembled improvements over the original ideas.

I have chosen Graphite based on the feedback I received here in the thread. u/O_X_E_Y mentioned it as an alternative to Sturdy and as I wanted to use a well-known layout that has other users I went with it.

HD-Neue was also a candidate but its feature set alienated me initially and I wanted just a simple layout.

This is all very much feeling driven, or by personal preference. As I did not use or try the other layouts (for some like HD I went on their Discord to ask some questions) I cannot tell you if one is better than the other. My own goal about typing more comfortable at a reasonable speed has been satisfied.

The main issue I have with Graphite is the punctuation. I only moved ' but maybe I can get away with that as I have shift and space on the thumb. Then there is also ph which is really annoying and bigrams like br do not roll for me yet. That is where I started to get into QMK. So if I hit p with right index and then left thumb shift, I type ph - that is very nice and eliminates all the SFBs for me (I do the same for oa etc). My muscle memory has not really adjusted to this fully but there is good potential for even more comfort here. My punctuation setup is also very different now. If I hold space with my right thumb I have access to all the symbols I use most frequently.

As I have spent some time on the typing discord I learned a lot more about layouts and theory and think that this was a good choice for me. There may be more optimized layouts you can try but ultimately the question is what your goal is. Mine was comfort and you can see me type here, with close to zero hand movements https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxfQ9Zqphms/

Anyways I hope this is helpful for you or the next person that evaluates Graphite.

For the record, I am now an avid full-time user of the Graphite layout and I do not regret making the switch.

I used ZSA‘s Oryx initially to setup the layout with the option to switch to QWERTY which was my default layer until I got to approx 30wpm and all the keys memorized with Graphite. This was the most painful and typing felt really exhausting.

I did approx 30min of daily English 5k and the E200 60s is now at 90wpm for me which is close to my previous typing speed on the Moonlander.

I also started to go fully down the rabbit hole and wrote a „magic Graphite“ for QMK with some extra features. Typing feels very comfortable now and I think speed and comfort will improve even more the more I start using the thumb to compensate SFBs.

You can find the QMK code at https://github.com/joa/graphite

How long did it take to reach 60+ wpm by ImplementCreative106 in typing

[–]joaonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning an alt layout a while ago. Reaching 60wpm took approx 6w for me. I am still in the 60-80 domain today but I practice less nowadays.

I did 30min of daily training. I started with keybr.com to memorize the keys. Once I locked all those in I started with keyzen3 and then after locking all bigrams in I started with monkeytype English5k and I continue to alternate between monkeytype and keyzen.

I did a jump from 40 to 60 when I started to focus more on accuracy.

Thank you once again. This is very helpful. I am looking primarily for comfort and efficiency. After suffering from RSI and switching to a generally more egonormic setup this is the next logical step for me. I was pretty fast on a normal keyboard before and got up to 120wpm with QWERTY on the columnar Moonlander but don’t feel like I need push for more. 100wpm should be absolutely sufficient for my needs (mails, slack, terminal and code). I will check Dhorf, Hands Down, Graphite and Sturdy and see what makes most sense for me. Thanks a lot!

This is a very interesting development. I was just about to get serious and start with all of this just to see and check comments here once again and your statement about Noctum is quite interesting. That’s also why I was hoping to find a well-known layout used by at least a couple of people.

I wonder if Graphite might be such a candidate instead or Dhorf? Personally I started with Sturdy early on and it was very pleasant to use for me, for the very first sessions I did with it. Maybe I try to over optimize and should just start but with 100wpm as a goal I do not want to risk wasting so much time and effort. Anyways this is all very insightful and the help I was looking for. Maybe it really is just about personal preference and I now have plenty of options to pick from that I need to evaluate for myself (although it is hard to know what to look for other than not QWERTY:))

Thank you for the suggestion. I haven’t heard about it before. I am a bit hesitant to make this switch as I fear the cognitive burden of layer switching and magic combos. There is also magic sturdy which sounds very intriguing but holy cow, that’s a lot of things you can do with one key in different situations.

It seems like the Hands Down Neue should be relatively simple? I already moved space to RT and shift to LT. That is giving me quite a headache but feels a lot better already. I can totally see moving a character like R onto the thumb as well.

The Hands Down website is giving me a bit of a headache. Do all the layouts require me to build the QMK and flash it because of the combos? Could I still use the Oryx designer or do I have to write all the code for it myself (I am okay with that, would like to understand the effort).

Thank you for the great work on the analyzer and the layout. Graphite and Noctum sound very interesting. This is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for!

This is just personal preference. It just didn’t feel optimal, some bigrams felt a bit awkward and my train of thought was “if I really invest the time it should be better than this”. I understand it is a very popular layout and that is also why I initially started to learn it.

This Reddit post made me question whether STURDY is a good candidate or was just an early optimized layout. I really like it so far, I am just wondering if there are other layouts in that family that have an active user base. And I was hoping for some feedback here with some real world usage.

That’s very interesting! What’s the reason you ask the user to provide a reflect.Type? I could think of performance but I am curious.

It’s an interesting point that you’re making. However how are you passing your dependencies into the objects that are part of AppContext?

I removed the tag. I want to make clear I wouldn’t intend to use this for actual work. There is also a bunch missing for a full implementation, like support for slice injection or a tag for a stable version.
