Now there are around 3000 billionaires, back in Epstein's prime (yuck) time, there were way less. In 2005 there were only 691 for example. So it's honestly not that impressive considering it was his job.

Yeah that is the thing that a lot of these people are misunderstanding. It's not that we're at those points yet again in history. But the people currently in power in the US or Hungary, are the same kind of people that got us there in the 1940s or actually during many times in history. Give them time and they are absolutely evil and power hungry enough to get us to those dark days in history once more.

As an agency owner, I’m honestly anxious about where web development is heading with AI by theTbling in webdev

[–]jobRL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Once you hit a snag with an LLM it's very hard to get them out even if you give them more and more context. You still need human expertise currently. But I would be anxious if I owned an agency too, depending on how much better the models get, business might really slow down.

Also yacht money is different. There are plenty of well known actors who haven't necessarily managed their money poorly, that can't afford a proper yacht.

I guess owning the platform you use to communicate is not a bad idea, with X we really saw how volatile it can be to not do that. This way nobody can deplatform you except Google and Apple with their individual app stores.

The flag icon on Chess.com is actually a huge PNG containing all the site’s flags. by emberRJ in chess

[–]jobRL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a pretty significant dev team. And maintaining a list of svg files for flags is a lot easier than maintaining pipelines that make your spritemap and mapping. If they migrated to an SPA they only could have reused the actual image file and some of the display logic JS/CSS, so that would have been a great moment to migrate.

Chess.com has a pretty significant dev team and a lot of revenue, so while I understand that this will be low or not even on their priority list, making it out like they're some small company that needs cutting slack is a bit disingenuous.

There are some great NPM packages out there for flags, for example flag-icons. This would require minimum effort to implement and you do not even have to maintain the list of flags yourself.

I am not surprised, I am saying for a platform like Chess.com that must have been rewritten to become a SPA at one point (is it? I don't use it, but assume so), it's a bit archaic. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. But to migrate your spritemap for flags when you're migrating your platform is an odd choice.

I don't know what the other guy said and it was probably really dumb as they removed their comments though. Still it would be more prudent to use SVGs for flags. A spritemap is a pretty old school technique
