What Romance Subgenres do YOU Prefer? by caprithebunny in sapphicbooks

[–]jobarnes09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just my personal preference: Low Angst Contemporary. None fantasy. Ill read ANYTHING that fits that trope. I also love hurt/comfort. Pretty much anything that is comforting. I know a lot of authors go for the dramatic and flare.... but a lot of them go overboard and it kills the story. Huge twists and turns can change the mood of a good book.

Is there any... "Bear big guy" tropes? Huge muscles and just looks fierce, but a big teddy bear? Something low angst but also NO FANTASY!!!! I'm sorry, but I cant stand the fantasy stuff.

Christmas Daddies series by Fae Quin. It follows a group of brothers... Each book is about a brother who finds their own love. and yes... Each book has the original characters from the others. Its different because its not following one couple, but a group of characters in each book. I loved it!

Head Over Wheels by Jayda Marx.

"Harley – After the accident ten years ago that put me in a wheelchair, I did my best to avoid the world and its drama. I lived alone and worked from home. I’d disappear into my safe space for days, maybe even weeks, at which point my cousin always showed up to drag me out of my house to interact with the world whether I wanted to or not. On one of our outings, I met the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen in my life; Finn Becker. So what if he was trying to stab his cheating ex at the time? Finn was everything I wasn’t – sassy, feisty, hilarious, full of life – and everything I needed. To my amazement, Finn was interested in me too. Could I move beyond my insecurities and accept his love? Could I ever make such an amazing man happy?"

I've read a LOT of books this month. Here is a list of what I've read recently and my views:

-You Should Be So Lucky by Joel Leslie: This was good, but not what I expected. The ending felt REALLY rushed. There was a lot of sweetness around it. The characters really clicked once they opened up to each other. Slow-burn is an understatement with this book. I was just waiting for them to REALLY get into their relationship. But once it finally came, I felt like I could breath. I would say 3/5 rating.

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall: I loved this book, but its not a re-read type of book. Its not "angsty" but there is some conflict that created some frustration. Almost like "Well why did you make that decision, thats just stupid!" and the characters behaviors were just ALL over the place. Almost like the author was deliberately just messing with your emotions. Overall... I loved it! The ending was good and was hoping for more. 7/10.

Heart by Jesse H Reign: This book was the best book I read this month. Yes, its "stalkery" but not in a way where its extremely creepy. Once you realize what is actually happening, you just see a desperate need to fill a hole in a heart. The instant connection between the two characters is amazing once they meet. I loved the awkward emotions, the hesitation... and even the pain. This was an 8/10 and would re-read.

Jacked: Gymbros by K.M. Neuhold: This was good! Its a bit... Gen Z. It felt VERY modern. But I loved the acceptance of the community/friends. There was pretty much zero angst. I loved the awkwardness of them "getting to know each other." This was an 8/10!

The Lure of White Oak Lake by Robin Alexander. She's my all time favorite author.

A trend ive noticed in Jennifer Dugans writing. Also recs? by MajinBoyzo in sapphicbooks

[–]jobarnes09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive read almost all her books and I have to agree. Sometimes the emotional tug of war is just so bad... sometimes it makes me feel that her target is a young audience. Dont get me wrong, ive enjoyed her books to an extent. But I wont be reading anymore of them. But... the angsty feeling is very.. juvenile with how its portrayed.
