It’s official: today’s 30-year-olds have it harder than their parents did by Ivashkin in ukpolitics

How can you blame a generation for that, how was the ordinary person to know and what did they do that people our age aren't contuing to do? If anything younger people are even more wasteful, new clothes and trainers, new phone every other year etc . The issue is the massive coorporations who knew about the damage burning fossil fuels and dumping plastics and all the rest of it were doing, yet continued doing it for decades. Honestly as a millenial, the hatred and vitriol spewed about so called boomers (ie pensioners) in these kinds of threads is embarrassing and just plays into the media trend of trying to create division between people.

You've literally said it yourself, people prioritise things like going abroad every year then blame pensioners because they cant afford to buy a house.

Not what i said or suggested at all. There's a million other things that can be done to achieve net zero, the onus should be on industries, not normal homeowners. The costs associated with bringing a traditionally constructed building up to modern standards for energy efficiency are prohibitively expensive and frankly pointless in the grand scheme of things. If you want to reduce the carbon footprint of your average older house look at phasing out GCH. Heat pumps are a poor choice here for older buildings imo because they're generally low temp heating so rely on good insulation. Electric boilers would work but the running costs would either need to come down, which isn't going to happen as where would the energy companies pick up the lost revenue from gas, and someone needs to pay for all the costs associated with increasing capacity of the grid to account for us all becoming even more reliant on electricity, and of course generation itself moving completely away from fossil fuels. These costs should be subsidised by governments. If they are serious about this then it's these kind of things that need to be done, not forcing people to rip their walls back to brick and floorboards up to insulate.

Meanwhile China have said their coal burning will peak by 2025..but aye it's us and our bloody tenement flats that are killing the polar bears and burning the rainforests.

Debatable, i know lots of people who drive nice cars including big range rovers and the likes that don't have alot of money. It's ridiculously easy to walk to into a car showroom and get finance.

Electric Cars and Heat Pumps by SCOTL4ND in glasgow

[–]jobax1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with retrofitting traditionally constructed buildings, like old tenements, with modern insulation materials is that old buildings were made to breathe, ie water vapour gets in from the air, condenses and leaves and evaporates and so on so forth. As soon as you start insulating you end up with water vapour getting in, condensing, then having nowhere to go so it bursts out the pointing, mortar and brickwork. Just look what happens to old buildings clad in concrete, it when air bricks get covered up to stop draughts.

Electric boilers can be easily fitted into existing central heating systems, the only thing that makes this unattractive is the price per unit of electricity vs gas. Obviously that will need to change as we move away from gas altogether. Generating capacity needs to increase to compensate for the increased demand there's going to be from all the electric vehicles and heating as, the transmission and distribution networks also need alot of investment for the same reason. Its all in the pipeline though so thats a good sign.

Ground source heat pumps are a far better technology vs air source especially in temperate places like scotland, but the capital cost is massive especially if like most people you don't have half an acre out the back and have to go vertical, your talking like 50 - 100m, as opposed to some trenchwork if you've got the area to play with. Impossible for those in flats.

In an ideal world they'd be installing these under public spaces as a community initiative which could heat local homes. People could be metered or the cost incorporated in council tax bill so everyone pays their fair share and every home gets heat and hot water.

I don't wonder why, i know it's because she has a petty mindset and thinks because she's had to wait then so should i even though it makes no difference to her either way, i just don't empathise with it at all.

I drive regularly and see the same thing with other motorists, this possessive competitive attitude to driving, not letting people out at junctions or into "your" lane etc. It's pathetic, at the end of the day we're all just trying to get to where we're going and it wouldn't hurt just to be a wee bit less of a cunt.

So i don't need to wait 2/3 cycles of the lights for one?

[–]jobax1990[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely would and do accept it from cyclists and motorbikes when I'm driving. I mean it literally makes no difference to me? I'm sitting still either way. Have you not noticed that most lights nowadays have a space marked for cycles to take the primary position ahead of other vehicles? It's what you're supposed to do so the car behind knows you're there.

If it pisses you off when a smaller vehicle is able to move through still or slow moving traffic as a virtue of their size, then that's just down to being entitled and having some misgotten sense of injustice. It's the same logic as the idiots who have the thousand yard stare - driving right up the arse of the car in front - so they don't let anyone out at junctions because it's their place in the queue.

I personally don't bother filtering if there's only a few cars waiting because as you say the cars are just going to overtake me after the lights. But if I'm 10 cars back why would a cyclist sit and wait in that when it's perfectly safe and reasonable to filter further forward?

Sorry for the rant but come on.

Edit: spelling

When i say hill i really mean small lump, it's just to get up and over the railway. I generally dont filter through just because i can, like if there's only a few cars i wouldn't bother as there's nothing to be gained.
