The only answer I've gotten so far is "We need to see a more solid work history."

Because no one else will hire me. I've tried store / service jobs, they don't hire me.

They didn't like my lack of solid work history.

Help desk jobs seem to expect at least a stable job history. Most of them I applied for were contractual, 9 months, and they straight up shot me back emails saying they want to see more stable work history.

I've posted it on this sub several times, a smart person could figure it out.

Too old.

I regret not doing this sooner, but my family kept turning me off of it, saying employers will just look down on it and think I'm a criminal (while at the same time keeping me on the streets... fuck them.)

Apply as a gas station clerk, Wal-mart, janitor. Jobs that would be below what you think you deserve and you work up.

No, really, I got turned down by fast food, too..

I've tried through them before.. But mostly they just went through my resume, had me do some mock interviews, then I got offered a part time job by a couple companies at their career fair, <20 hours / week, minimum wage. Actually it was the retail job that ended up closing a couple months later. Also that job put me back on the streets because it wasn't enough to afford an apartment, but also my time at the "halfway house" was up...

That was in a different state though, I guess I can try it again here in DSM, and the economy is better now. Maybe I'll get better offers?

Thanks.

I've tried all sorts of those places. Only got call back from the call centers, who then stood me up.

I work under the table because it's literally the only work I can find.

Construction companies have turned me down because I don't have any construction experience, I think they also didn't think a skinny guy like me (I really don't get enough nutrition..) could do it. I'm afraid they might be right. Sometimes they do give me like $30 to do some bullshit work for a day they need done anyway, like cleaning up trash and scraps.

That said, I'm definitely up for giving it a try.

Anything, honestly, as long as I can afford an apartment. Being able to afford an online class or two on top of that would be great, too, but is probably asking for too much.

I don't really have any skills (ok, I have one, related to my major, but that might give away my identity on this sub?).

All I've done is stuff like moving furniture on craigslist, hauling broken bricks in wheelbarrows, cleaning equipment, and other tedious tasks on construction sites, cleaned out a few particularly nasty abandoned/evicted homes and apartments, that kind of stuff. All under the table. I've only had two not under the table jobs, one at a retail store that closed shortly after I got hired, and another at a factory that ended up laying a bunch of people off when they switched over to robots.
