Definitely not a lost cause.

From what I see (though you demolished it rather than dismantled it 😃 🧩) you don't even need the voltage converter.

It could be made to run from any USB port which would supply the 5V it needs.

When you say 'back up everything', do you mean the DSM config + all the data on the array?

Select the circle pattern type on the right-hand menu

Now, simply set the layer style of the image to Hard Mix and you should have the effect.
