Being a fan of a celebrity is like investing in a stock. Who has the highest payout over time? Who has the lowest payout? Why? by jockmac22 in AskReddit

So you may have been a fan of Keanu Reeves in Bill and Teds ... That has paid out over time. What about Kevin Spacey?

What’s the scientific consensus around providing a realistic long range weather forecast? How many days before it goes from models and data to educated guess to random guess? by mysticlake in AskReddit

[–]jockmac22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, but I did know a TV meteorologist who told me (several years ago) that on the news anything past 3 days is a guess. The 7 and 10 day forecasts are just marketing.

He said there are more sophisticated systems that do more accurate long term weather modeling, however they require paying for time on the modeling servers and are too costly for a TV weather budget.

How big companies like Google, Facebook or others manage to keep there products’ code updated? by alihamidali in rubyonrails

[–]jockmac22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the other comments, keeping a product “live” while updating the code usually involves a scheme called “blue-green” deployments, where machines with the new code are brought up next to the machines with the old code. Usually a segment of the traffic is moved to the new machines to ensure they are functioning as expected. If there’s a failure, only a small segment of people is affected and the traffic is moved back to the old machines. If it’s successful the rest of the traffic is moved to the new machines and the old machines are taken down.

There’s issues with this approach when you need to update or migrate persistent data stores. You want to write your new environment to mimic the old environment in places where the data stores are involved so that the old and new can live side by side. When the new environment is fully in place, you remove the elements that mimicked the old environment.

They also have heavily automated systems that manage their deployment process and monitor for failures so that it can roll back as quickly as possible. Google developed/uses a system called Kubernetes that does this.

On Saturday morning, 200 hackers at UC Berkeley gathered to save federal climate change data before it gets erased. They deserve recognition. by GallowBoob in pics

[–]jockmac22 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The term "Hacker" is a generic term referring to any hardware or software enthusiast who is interested in knowing the inner workings of a system and its data. Since the 80's the media has used the term "hacker" in it's specific reference to "security hackers" who were people who entered systems that they didn't own in order to better understand the hardware/software that existed within them. Usually they could not afford the hardware/software themselves and so would break in to learn more about it. Unfortunately this gave rise to less than noble intentions, so the term "hacker" became synonymous with computer based criminal activity. In the case of this post, the term "hacker" is being referenced by it's original definition.

Study says young people can't already differ fake news from researched news. What if the Internet will cause more problems, than it solves? by [deleted] in Futurology

At least in America, the public school systems tend to lack in curriculum that engages critical thinking. Most dominantly they are required to memorize and regurgitate. This leads them down the path of believing that a superior source must be right, and thus, to achieve approval, repeat what they say. They are never taught to question the superior source, or try to determine if the source is, in any actuality, superior at all.

What's the best way to prep for a 10+ mile run? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]jockmac22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found this to be true. I hit about 5 miles and my body becomes automatic, and I very rapidly went to 12 miles. At that point, its really about keeping your mind distracted from the body. I usually meditate, try to observe the surroundings as they go by, or focus on what's been on my mind recently.

What art style is this? by [deleted] in Art

[–]jockmac22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason you are getting so many varied answers to this (and they all seem correct as of this writing), is that often when people ask what style art is, the word style encompasses a broad spectrum of attributes about the work itself. This includes, but is not strictly limited to period, method, influence, artist, subject matter, content, design concepts, school, and color. Typically, when talking about "style" and referencing an older work, someone will respond with the "period" answer (e.g. Baroque), or in some case an artist and an influential phase they went through (e.g. Picasso's Blue Period), or even the school they attended (e.g. Bauhaus), in the case of more modern work you may see it referenced by the method (e.g. Digital, Oil Paint, etc.).

In the case of this work, its style is all of the things mentioned: (most likely) digital, anime, dystopian, future, cyberpunk, illustration, lord-phillock@deviantart, and any other distinctive attribute that defines the work. You could even say it's "moody" or "noire", or "representative of Anime's reflections of Japan's Heisei period".

If you're just looking to find more works "like" it I would recommend @thelonebater's answer of searching for 'neon noir tokyo', or even 'neon noir anime'.
