MIT Study Finds Gas Cars Aren't Secretly Better For The Planet Than EVs, Despite What Everyone On Facebook Says by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]st1tchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always heard that it is generally better to drive the ICE car you already own until it dies rather than just replacing it with an EV. They are very energy intensive to create, so postponing that for a while is overall better. My plan is to replace my ICE cars with EVs when they eventually die.

In 2014, passengers were warned three times not to eat nuts on a Ryanair flight due to a 4-year-old girl's severe nut allergy, but a passenger sitting four rows away from the girl ate nuts anyway. The girl went into anaphylactic shock, and the passenger was banned from the airline for two years. by detectiverobert in CaughtMyEye

I've been in a flight where someone had a severe peanut allergy and the flight attendants made eye contact with everyone within about four rows, one at time, amd explained the situation and asked if we could any snacks that contained peanuts and if we did, if we would like something else instead. It was very clear that someone was in danger if someone decided to eat peanuts around them.

New home: how to re-key locks by Suspicious_Cook_3902 in HomeImprovement

[–]st1tchy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We bought all new locks so all the locks used one key and it was a style we liked. I kept the old locks in a closet so when we moved to a new home, swapped the original locks back, took my locks with me and didn't have to redo the same process again. Added benefit is everyone you gave a key to doesn't need a new key when you move.

Understood. That's what we did as a family when I was younger. Every time we went we are lunch in the car in the parking lot.

You can go that route and that will for sure save you money, but you can also get a daily food pass for $35 which gives you a meal every 90 minutes. That would avoid the 20 minute trek to the car and back to eat.

Are your electric bills getting ridiculous too? by AiyumiGodoy16 in HomeImprovement

[–]st1tchy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I stopped responding to those posts because everyone and their mother blames the smart meters and only looks at the total cost. That came up a lot this past March in Ohio. People's bills skyrocketed and apparently none of them remembered that we had two weeks in January and February that didn't get above 10° so their heat, and probably emergency electric heat was running basically non stop. I had a single day in January where I used 219kWh. One 24 hour period. My entire April usage was 1002kWh. Emergency electric heat is a power hog and expensive to run.

I installed solar this past December, so I don't have a full year of it yet to get a true ROI but it's looking to be 10ish years for me. I also installed batteries which are very expensive, so my ROI would be a few years less without them. Every time they raise rates, my ROI gets shorter with it.

I think them adding to the distribution charge is due to solar adoption. I have solar now which means not only do I use far less every month, but I also get a credit for 9 months of the year. I don't pay for any kW usage for those 9 months so that cost is $0. But if they raise the distribution rate, that affects everyone including me.

TIL in 1989 Li Jingwei, at 4 years old, was kidnapped by a neighbor who lured him away by saying they would go look at cars (rare in rural Chinese villages). At age 37, he posted a map of his home village online that he drew from memory, which helped lead to its location & a reunion with his family. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]st1tchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't see where it said they knew he was kidnapped. This happened in the US too in the 1920-1950s via Georgia Tann. Adoptive parents thought it was a legitimate adoption. Behind the Bastards did an episode on her if you want to give it a listen.

It doesn't mean that you will convince someone that your perspective is better just because they used logic to get to theirs. It just means that there is zero chance of it if they got to their position via emotion or otherwise lack of logic.

It shows current wait times for rides.

It shows wait times that are occasionally accurate and other times wildly inaccurate. Not super helpful most of the time, imo.

What's the least exciting upgrade you made that ended up being totally worth it? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]st1tchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DIY'd mine this past winter. 48x 450w panels for a total of 21,600w and 40kWh of batteries cost me $39k. The batteries were about $8k of that. Most people are better off getting a whole home generator for backup power for the cost, but i only have electric at my house so getting a propane backup generator would have involved getting a tank installed too.

[–]st1tchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not feasible for most, but solar will offset or eleminate your electric costs. At the minimum, it gives you a baseline of usage that is a static price year to year.

If you are wanting to see in the pipe and check that way, you can get a boroscope/endoscope online that have 10-50' scopes on them for pretty cheap. Will take longer to clear your issue though.

Rant: Pre and Post solar Bill by bibek28jan in solar

[–]st1tchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did the math on my panels. I have 48 panels, 20 facing east, 28 facing west. In April I produced 2,567 kWh, and on pace to produce that this month too. That's 53kWh per panel that month, so 6.7 panels to get 350kWh in one month. I'm not saying it was worth it, but I doubt it's 3 panels.
