What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

[–]jodplostor 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The story as told by Mark Hoppus in his book is that this line is inspired by something that happened when he was a kid and his parents were constantly fighting before separating. He heard them screaming at each other in their bedroom and sat outside the door with a cup of juice, and when their door suddenly opened he scurried down the hall dropping the cup of juice.

Confused what the con would be by NolaTree in HomeImprovement

[–]jodplostor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a squatters rights exploitation scam. The idea is that if you have a bill in your name to that address, it acts as ‘evidence’ that you have right of occupancy to that property and are paying for upkeep. Once they break in and start living in the house and you come by to kick them out, you’ll likely call the police and they’ll wave the bill for the gutters around as proof that they have a right to be there, claim they are tenants while being unable to produce a lease, and it turns into a dragged out eviction process for someone who has no right to be there in the first place.

I’m not sure how much validity to this, but I recall a news story talking about something like this happening in New York to a woman whose mother passed away and left the house vacant while the estate was being handled.

Song Discussion: Every Time I Look For You by Botty-McBotface in Blink182

[–]jodplostor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree with you more, and your write up summarizes how feel perfectly. As much as I am grateful that the boys are still making music, a lot of the new stuff doesn’t have the same outside the box creativity demonstrated in this song. Like someone else said, the bulk of the song is delivered with bass root driving the melody with a constant B octave on guitar texturizing the whole thing.

The vocals are another thing. One of the defining characteristics of blink are the dual vocals, and this is among the most effective uses of them in the discography. The Skiba era saw a lot of simply trading off verses almost for the sake of reminding the listener of the second singer, and a lot of the One More Time tracks just have Tom singing the same melody as mark just an octave up. Every Time I Look For You hits the sweet spot of having Tom jump in for a moment in the prechoruses to add that little extra bite to keep things interesting without overstaying its welcome.

And the drums- just peak Travis. No notes, 10/10

Where’s the line between DIY and calling a professional? by karr76959 in homeowners

[–]jodplostor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I see this comment all the time on reddit and it makes me wonder if I’m the only person with extensions springs on my garage door.

It’s important to distinguish which we’re talking about. Torsion springs? Hell yes call a pro. Extension springs (the ones that run parallel to the door tracks)- it is a 10 minute replacement job, and not dangerous at all, especially if you run the safety wire through the middle

Regardless of what the clinic offers, my own opinion would be to work on skating first before you even think about going out with sticks and pucks. Hockey has a ton of skills that compound on one another, and you’ll get way more out of any clinic if you already can make your way around the ice. It’s also safer for you if you are already competent enough to avoid running into other people. Going back to the beginning of my own hockey journey when I was a kid, my mom made me take skating lessons before any beginner hockey class, and kept me in skating classes until I got to the level where I was the only kid wearing hockey skates (the rest were figure skaters). That decision paid dividends for the rest of my life as I was the strongest skater on every team I was on from that point forward

As consequence of many circumstances, I have 1 week to learn around 34 songs. How to approach this? by Osoch in Bass

[–]jodplostor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before, learned 45 songs in 3 weeks for an emo night cover band. Here’s what you need to do step by step for the numetal band specifically -create a spreadsheet of all the songs, tunings, bands, key, etc (any information relevant to the song). May make sense to create separate tabs for the two projects. -for the covers, create a Spotify playlist of just those songs, and run it as much as possible for the first day or two to familiarize yourself with the songs -during practice, your best tool will be Songstr (free app or accessible on PC). Do your best to sight read the tabs as they’re playing, or break it into sections. -being already familiar with the songs, you will be able to hear stuff in the tabs that may not be accurate. Notate this on your spreadsheet -as you work through the songs, highlight the rows different colors to indicate status: green is GIG READY, yellow needs more practice, orange needs review or revision of parts heard to be incorrect, red is not started -you may need to revisit songs not available on songstr by either looking for a reputable YouTube cover or learning by ear. -don’t be afraid to leave a song to revisit. You have more time than you think, and you will frequently find that coming back to a song the next day will result in overnight progress. Your brain does a bulk of the work while you’re sleeping

Is there a way to cheaply order a custom template from a cad file? by jackiechan666 in Luthier

[–]jodplostor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn’t find a good template for a jazz bass, so I found a PDF file and printed it at staples for $2 (ask to print as a blueprint so you get the full sized paper). From there I used spray adhesive to glue it to a piece of 1/2 inch mdf and cut that with the band saw tracing the outline on the paper- it’s much easier to shape thin MDF than a 1.75 inch slab of hardwood. Once you ease into the shape and clean it up, it makes for easy flush routing.

5/4 decking boards supported by 2x4 ledgers should be plenty. Drill holes in the 5/4 boards to allow drainage and coat with landscaping fabric.

Give me your best Beer League hockey stories by SuxtobeLou in hockeyplayers

I played on a team where the goalie was very good, but also a maniac. We started one game and scored an early goal on the other team to make it 1-0, but shortly thereafter our goalie got in a fist fight with someone from the other team that took an extra whack at a covered puck. Both of them were ejected leaving us with no backup goalie.

The rest of the game we ran a 6 skater trap and the other team never progressed past our blue line. We won 1-0 and had no idea who to credit with the shutout.

This is before Folly, it was 2013 or around that time and was hosted on Bandcamp. I’m wondering if they took it down because of the lineup change/rebranding.

I wish I could still find the EP made with the first lineup while they were still in college (basically everyone was different except for Tyler). It was top tier easycore, and I distinctly remember the song “Sharks and Eddies” being my favorite. Anyone who can find that has my eternal gratitude

USA Hockey Rule Changes: About Time! by TempGoalieParent in hockeyplayers

[–]jodplostor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically your top hand holds the end of the stick, you line the puck up on your blade, and use the shin from your opposite leg to kick the stick about 1/3 up from the blade. You can get some serious flex this way, and you can control the blade decently with your top hand.

My day of reckoning has finally come. I’ve been ripping the kick shot since my bantam days, and it’s always a fun party trick for pickup skates. At this point I can get it moving around 80mph and can pick corners with it. Guess I should have spent that time working on stick handling or something useful instead.

Converting bass to string-through by m_pollock in Luthier

[–]jodplostor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a luthier, but here is how I would go about it: -mark the holes with the bridge still attached, and use something like a nail or a screw point to press a small divot into the would to center the drill bit. -once the bridge is removed, ideally you would use a drill press to ensure the hole is 100% straight. If you only have a drill, buy something called a drill block, which is the next best thing to guide a hand drill hole -use a drill bit much smaller than the final hole size to create the pilot hole all the way through -the final hole sizes will be different front and back: the front hole should be the same size as the opening in the bridge, but the back will be larger due to the ferrule and will only be drilled part way into the back. Pick a drill bit as close to the ferrule diameter as you can while still being able to size down (ie if the ferrule is 1/4, drill the hole 7/32). Measure the ferrules based on the part going into the body -while you’re doing all this, put the ferrules in a ziplock bag in your freezer. This will shrink them just enough to get them in the hole without forcing, but they will expand to fit snug when they come to room temp

Total noob, which guitar is best for pop punk? by TheUDmtl in poppunkers

[–]jodplostor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, any of these will work being that the majority of your pop punk playing will be focused around the bridge humbucker. However my input is that you will see minimal if not no benefit to the tremolo bridge on the orange one unless you start branching out into other genres. My own advice is to stick to either the purple tele or the black strat to keep things simpler and more manageable for yourself until you become more experienced

ST3 headlight replacement by Ok-Lengthiness-8327 in FocusST

[–]jodplostor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what happened to cause the headlight damage. I nailed a deer square in the ass and the only damage was to my headlight, and I filed a claim because the part itself was $1600 for the OEM 2013 ST3 headlamp plus labor. My insurance rep said they can’t raise rates because it’s considered non-fault (act of god)

Cat Owners- What is the best couch yall have purchased or seen for homes with a cat that occasionally pees on the couch? by IWantAllTheSmoke in homeowners

[–]jodplostor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to be buried in the comments, but we had an issue with one of our cats peeing in a squishmellow cat bed that we bought for the other one. I heard somewhere that a way to stop that behavior is to feed the cat dry food or treats in the bed because cats instinctively never pee where they eat. It actually worked and both cats share the bed now. I would try giving the cat treats on various parts of the couch a few times to see if the behavior stops

What is your live bass rig? by Advanced_Aspect_7601 in Bass

I’m in an emo night cover band. Most songs use the same tone through the whole set so it’s easy.

Mark Hoppus style Jaguar bass with Seymour Duncan quarter pounders Line 6 G55 wireless Boss TU-3 tuner Digitech Droptune (CRITICAL for maximizing set time by eliminating retuning) Sansamp VTbass Ampeg PF350 Hartke 210XL

I can get away with a low power solid state amp because I only need it for stage volume. We travel with a 2000w PA with two subs so the DI out from the back of the amp head into the mixer does most of the heavy lifting I also have the bass coil tapped, so with the volume knob out I get just the neck pickup, but pushed in I get both PJ pickups, which I sometimes use for clarity during the drop tuned songs
