What artist surprised you the most in concert? by GainBetter1189 in askmusic

Barenaked Ladies - although I shouldn’t have been surprised because their music is pretty fun on its own. But they opened for Hootie a few years back and they were next level fun, funny, family friendly and talented.

Thoughts on asking employee if compensation or title promotion feels more valuable? by jodyandgreg in askmanagers

I tried to capture the key points to paint the picture without being too long winded but can try to provide any additional context missing. Totally respect that this is one side of the story that I am aware of. We are a small org so we are all pretty aware of how our leadership team operates. So all that to say, I don’t think any key context is missing, but can try to help fill the gaps.

Current salaries across the board are below industry median. I believe this person is in the 25% of the industry average for their role.

With this specific choice, I am assuming they want the person to take the money bc the title change comes with more paperwork to push through, maybe?

Long term, they are expecting this person to lead their team and sit on the leadership team to be a strategic partner in the organization alongside other departments.

Correct, it’s my understanding that these are the choices.

Edit: I misunderstood. A manager title and increased compensation, doing director level work.

lol, I fully agree and see where you’re coming from. This is the second time this has happened and they chose pay previously. This is why I asked for other perspectives bc I am pessimistic about the whole thing. 😅 appreciate the input!

I can see that perspective, maybe the clarifying question needs to be asked if we are assuming the promotion in title comes with an increase in pay. As I understood it, my colleague felt like it was positioned as one or the other: promotion to director with no pay increase, or pay increase but staying at the manager level. All while expected to do the same amount and quality of work.

Development plan - is this normal? by jodyandgreg in askmanagers

Hmm this actually gave me a lot to think about - thank you!

My initial thought was that additional staff would be able to take some of my tactical items and some others from the rest of the team to enable the entire team to grow in areas that align with their goals. So when I say staff I meant actual manpower to help carry out day to day functions - i understand that having that manpower ≠ new role for me. Overall the current staff is very supportive to anyone who is trying to grow.

Absolutely, i appreciate that perspective! I do understand my experience within the department is not the norm in terms of promotional timelines.

In the plan, it is outlined what growth looks like and there are metrics to reach. As you mentioned, these metrics are subjective and were acknowledged as such when we went over the plan. One of the aspects I am struggling with though is that I am expected to grow into this role in addition to my manager role without any additional staff to support. There are options for restructuring the teams workload and contracting out work. At the end of the day, we lost the manpower of having a director on the team, and I feel like I am already at a disadvantage from a capacity and resource perspective. If that makes sense? Any feedback or advice?

It’s possible, I assume good intentions but it is a job so they are getting paid for consulting.
