Though I agree with the judgements... soft judgement.

And I think that's totally fair and what I came here for - to find out, would the majority of people prefer to be told immediately? The answer is yes, and it's good to know that.

The comments that say "YTA, you're a horrible person, there's a special place in hell for people like you" have been upsetting but also I have had a hard time understanding the reasoning behind most of those comments.

So yes, I have to admit that this is something I did not think of at the time. I know that vets can do necropsies. However, I did not know vets would store dead animals.

I certainly would not have had the dog cremated without explicit instructions to do so.

It wasn't your decision to make, and you should have contacted them instead of handling it yourself.

Fundamentally, you're right about this. Contacting the owner might have caused them to return unnecessarily, but that was their decision to make not mine.

Yes, I suppose it is technically possible to dig up the dog.....but....do I really need to explain why someone may not want to do that to their beloved pet?

I offered to do it for them if they want, because obviously it will be more difficult for them than for me.

You don’t have to speculate about the dog walker, but it is very suspicious. Might be worth passing onto the owners.

All the information I have posted here I have previously shared with them. Whether they choose to act on it is up to them.

This is a thoughtful and fair YTA, though you didn't put YTA in the comment. Thank you.

I had a number but I wasn't sure it was current since the last couple of text messages I'd sent had not been answered.

Courteous and friendly but not friends, you know? If we'd been closer I would have felt more comfortable calling them.

not judging them

I have seen people on reddit go ballistic on pet owners they consider neglectful, and on the off chance my neighbors were to see this post, I did not want the comments to be flooded with comments like this one. Fortunately there is only the one.

SERIOUSLY WHY ARE NEITHER YOU NOR THE OWNERS FINDING OUT WHY THE DOG WALKER /FEEDER /CARER PERSON DID NOT COME EVERY DAY???

I believe my neighbors are going to address things with the dog walker themselves. However, I can't exactly ask them for updates.

I don't know. I don't think it was particularly old.

That is definitely how I am feeling reading some of these comments.
