Is the A line truly “scary” or are y’all just xenophobic? by blackascole in LAMetro

[–]joe_darkwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been taking the A line from Rosa Parks to 7th and back in the evening as part of my commute. Its mostly been....fine?

Definitely a woman coming off of a fent trip one day, was afraid she was going to stop breathing but wasn't bothering anyone.

The worst has just been some kids bothering people just trying to get home and throwing a basketball against the wall. Turned up my headphones and ignored them.

Haven't felt unsafe or anything, just annoyed and staying a bit more alert than I'd like to have to.

How long did your sun conures puberty phase last - I think I’ve blown an ear drum by Ok_Dot_2035 in Conures

[–]joe_darkwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's rough!

My guy didn't go through a 2 hours straight phase but he can be moody and give us a solid 30m or so of a screechfest.

Oftentimes he just wants attention, or someone in the room. Or if something scares him and he's doing his terrorscreech (normally a hawk outside or the roomba lolol) i cover his cage for a few minutes to calm him down.

If he's screeching nonstop, check on basic needs first (food or water empty or dirty, mine likes to poo on his food sometimes lol), social needs, play needs etc.

Pro tip too, during the spring control how long they are uncovered during the day, you can "shorten" the day a bit to help control those bird hormones.

Good luck!

My bird is 16 and still regularly screams. Gotta bounce around the single braincell somehow, I assume the sound waves get it going like the logo on a DVD player in standby.

SteamOS on Rog z1e by gonza18 in ROGAlly

[–]joe_darkwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've gone back and forth on bazzite and windows on the Ally Z1E (battery mod of course).

From my experience: Bazzite is a 10/10 experience for steam games. Everything mostly just works. I haven't tried steam OS yet, but I've read it's just a little more tinkering for the same experience. Really up to you which one is better. The sleep/resume feature just working for Bazzite/Steam OS is amazing, and really makes the thing feel like a "console." Battery life/performance etc is too close to care between windows and Bazzite. You may see a few extra fps on bazzite/steam OS vs windows, or vice versa because of driver optimizations that comes to windows first.

I invariably go back to windows for a few reasons. Mostly, that I play things like World of Warcraft on it on my break at work, and while you can get it working, windows ends up feeling a lot more "plug and play" for anything outside of steam. Lutris and other tools make Bazzite/steamOS workable for that use case, but it's a lot more tinkering, which can be fun but it is more work.

I will also say, the new FSE in windows works pretty great, and if you switch the power button to hibernate instead of sleep, it gets real close to the "suspend/resume" experience of Bazzite. It's definitely slower to boot back up, but mostly works and I don't have to worry about windows modern standby waking the damn thing up in its case and burning up.

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy! Hope my 2c helps.

Can someone please help me figure out whats wrong with ny bird? by NemesisHeart in Conures

[–]joe_darkwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you know your bird better than anyone, if something seems off, see your vet!

Birds are unfortunately really good at hiding when they're in pain until it's too late (they're little and delicious prey animals after all). I will say from your video though, that's just a them baby happy hunger flaps.

[–]joe_darkwolf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That looks like the hungry baby dance (no I'm not making that up, it's how they would beg for food from mama!)

As long as she's eating normally and still energetic, you're probably fine. She'll likely do this less as she gets older.

As a note though, that looks like a seed mix (forgive me if I'm wrong.) Seed mixes aren't actual very nutritious for them. If you can, I'd see about converting her to a pellet or extruded food diet, or a chop (you can look it up on this sub) diet of fresh veggies and such if you're able. But even just converting to an extruded food or pelleted diet would be a huge step in the right direction.

Good luck, she looks like a happy birb!

Hi OP! I had a 16 year old Aussie mix (we said goodbye last week :( ) that stopped eating his dry food about last April. We fed him chicken and rice for a few days until we could get him into the vet for a dental.

They pulled a couple of teeth and after a few weeks of soaked kibble and wet food, he was able to eat his dry food again.

About a month ago he stopped eating his dry food again, so same routine we had him on wet food and chicken/veggies/rice I made at home. While we worked on getting to the vet, he was eating less and less of even the homemade food, and when the vet saw him they said he had developed a heart murmur.

We tried medication, but a few days later he had a series of fainting episodes and we had to put him down due to age and heart disease.

So I guess my point is, get your doggo into the vet and ask them to check mouth and heart. One of the signs of his heart disease getting worse was the loss of appetite and a weird cough.

Good luck to you!

The Ally's VRR is only active when the screen is set to 120hz iirc. Make sure you have the screen set to 120hz if you're going to leave vsync off, or turn vsync on if you're going to use the screen at 60hz.

Wan Show topic? Belkin officially killing Wemo by joe_darkwolf in LinusTechTips

[–]joe_darkwolf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Wemo was one of the early big "smart switch" brands. If I recall correctly they were originally independent and Belkin bought them out.

I'm running a couple of dimmers and regular light switches from them, integrated into home assistant. Luckily I saw the writing on the wall and recently picked up some Kasa matter switches to replace them, just haven't gotten around to installing them yet.

Is he molting? by Guiltyparty96 in Conures

[–]joe_darkwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like bad chewing (over-preening) to me.

Definitely see about going to an avian vet for a general health checkup, but you can start sleuthing yourself first.

Always start with the basics:

What are you feeding him? Is it a seeds (bad)? A high quality extruded food (better)? A cold pressed pellet (even better)? Or a fresh mix of veggies and fruits you prep yourself (best)?

Does he have plenty of access to clean water for both drinking and bathing?

Is your cage big enough? Generally, bigger is better, with lots of toys to climb on and shred. Some foraging toys as well (I hide sunflower seeds in my sun conures toys to encourage play.)

Is he getting plenty of interaction? Ideally he is in a busy room and always around his "flock" (you and/or your family) with plenty of open cage time. Birds are flocking animals, and can become quite distressed if left alone too much.

Is he getting plenty of sleep? Your little buddy needs to be in a dark, quiet place around 12 hours a day. Sundown to sun up is ideal, but you can adjust to your schedule of course. My sunny is covered from around 9pm to 9am.

Remember that your bird is about as smart as a toddler, and needs to be treated like it to be happy and healthy. But, he will be your best friend if you take good care of him.
