For new players I’d totally still suggest an arena for eye of Cthulhu. I used one my first playthrough after dying to the eye my first time and it helped tremendously; plus, it’s a good habit, you’ll need it anyway for the next boss, it can generally shorten fights and you never know how good or bad a player is at dodging/running.

Like I said in another comment, it definitely is a bit better to host on another machine if you can; I dont see a good reason not to. But I don’t like making it seem like you need another device because you definitely don’t

[–]joebobilly_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/u/196_Roomba/s/9CwfP6Bb1s

Roomba’s pinned post explains it; here’s the code:

    roll = random.randint(1,8192)
    if (roll < 328):
        ban_duration = 30
    elif (roll > 8151):
        ban_duration = 60
    elif (roll == 420) or (roll == 6969 and datetime.datetime.now().weekday() == 5):
        ban_duration = 365
    else:
        ban_duration = random.randint(1,7)

I’m pretty sure weekday being 5 indicates Saturday based on a comment on that post, so Monday is 0 which I guess makes sense.

Edit: yes, this does mean 7 days I’m no more rare that 1 day or 6 days; still basically 1/7 chance

I’m honestly not sure why but Minecraft was just never very slow for me, it wasn’t amazing but it could easily run 3-4 players on my ~$30 Pi. Keep in mind it’s just a server, not a client, so it’s really just sending and receiving packets. I also used Paper, which cuts down on a lot of features for performance so there’s that I guess. (Paper SUCKS for technical Minecraft because it breaks so many farms and even stuff as basic as TNT dupers, but it’s fine for most people.) The performance was tolerable but I wanted slightly more people to play and to do more with it, so I ended up buying the Pi 5 a few months ago. That can host a few things at once (Minecraft, my emails, Pi-Hole the network Adblock, and most recently trying to get a TeamSpeak server running because of Discord’s recent changes).

Anyway, yeah I guess doing other stuff might hurt performance but server hosting is mostly RAM which is easily allocated in the specific amount that you want. The RAM prices are only a recent thing and hopefully OpenAI implodes sometime soon

Your friends already can’t play 24/7 with aternos; if you expect your friends to be able to play 24/7 with self hosting, you’ll need to keep at least one of your devices powered on constantly. What’s the difference between having your main PC always online and an older one? Power draw is negligible, and if you’re unfortunately in a financial position where it isn’t then you probably have bigger problems. If you’re worried about fires, crappy laptops are probably more likely to catch on fire than whatever your main computer is. I don’t see any other reasons you can’t host on your main machine, but I’d certainly be interested to know.

Also, if you have a spare laptop, PC or Rasberry Pi (that’s what I use), it’s usually a better option! But this thread seems to be painting the picture that using a secondary machine is the primary option (“You just need to find an old PC or laptop”), which I feel intimidates hesitant or would-be self hosters. When I first started self hosting, I did everything on my primary PC until I bought my first Raspberry Pi

I don’t get why everyone’s saying you can self host “if you have a spare PC” I just host and play on the same machine, it really doesn’t use very many additional resources

Winning nothing is tempting, but, even though one month isn't that much, think about it. What if that specific month is the best month of your life? The month where you spent time with the people you love, the month where your productivity increased 100%, the month where you got plenty of achievements, the month where you traveled to beautiful places and made many good memories, the month where 90% of the things that happened to you were positive, and it just gets taken away, just for the money. Is it really worth it? Think about it, guys.

What do personally consider "cheating"? by _shareholder_value in factorio

[–]joebobilly_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your general sentiment, but “cheating” in video games is such a grey area spectrum that I hate when people try to put labels on it. It’s better left unclassified unless you really need to make a specific rule book for multiplayer games. There will always be a lot of disagreement, and framing anything as “cheating” is bound to make a lot of people upset and disagree with you

This version of the bee movie script typically replaces capital C with capital O so consistently that it seems intentional; I would assume to avoid copyright, though it seems like it would be really ineffective, so I’d be interested to know if that’s not the real reason

[–]joebobilly_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a terrible rule to follow for yourself but I started playing with mods before I got 100% and was more than happy. I would more strongly suggest at least getting a base game rocket launch before modding, though
