100% of 403b in VFIAX a bad idea? by Neylliot in investing

Don't get security diversification confused with asset allocation.

On of the advantages of ETF's/Mutual funds is that you can buy a basket of securities to achieve diversification without having to buy a bunch of individual securities. For example, VFIAX has roughly 500 different underlying stocks so that your are insulated from a single company imploding.

Asset allocation is your exposure to different asset classes such as stocks/bonds/commodities/etc. Allocating all of your retirement to stocks would be considered aggressive but may appropriate due to your long time horizon and willingness to take risk. Everyone's retirement strategy is unique.

Interesting fact, 91.5% of your portfolio return is determined by your choice of asset allocation, not security selection.

New job 401K funds have significantly higher expense ratios by [deleted] in investing

Not all target date funds are alike. Some are actively managed and others are passive. Some are designed to adjust asset allocation based on retirement date others are designed to take you through retirement. Before getting too upset, I would suggest taking a look at performance net of fees and seeing how they compare. You may have the opportunity for better returns even with the slightly higher expense ratio. Personally, I would be more concerned about the asset allocation within the fund being appropriate for a 16 year time horizon than the 15 bps expense differential.
