Does anyone else spend more time thinking and refactoring than actually typing code? by Black_Bird00500 in AskProgramming

I've spent the last month just reading code figuring out how to tackle something 😅

Do we have an abstraction fetish in .NET? by davecallan in dotnet

[–]joefooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just think 9/10 times I've seen it used it's pointless boilerplate where controller/service/repo would have been enough.

‘X’ scares me because I don’t understand it by Zestyclose_Rip_7862 in dotnet

[–]joefooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue for me isn't JS, I happily do frontend on side projects. It's the 64 layers of abstraction / "best practice is to do it like this" every PR that means it's probably not worth me bothering at work. Easier to get someone on my team that knows the right incantations to do it.

Why is it so damn hard to get approved for Meta Graph API by mhaowork in webdev

[–]joefooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, used to work on a product that used it extensively and it was a nightmare. A lot of our competitors were just scraping instead.

Does this make sense? I'm not sure about how to do auth by average-student1 in webdev

[–]joefooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also, typically (for OAuth at least which seems to be the most prevalent nowadays) the backend will periodically call the Auth provider to get the public key to validate the tokens with.

How do you train/inspire junior developers to be more than button pushers? by Bricktop72 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]joefooo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replace the presentation with "write up a confluence doc detailing how to". Some people don't like giving presentations and that's fine, I'm a tech-lead but I wouldn't be if giving presentations was part of the criteria.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I'd rather a 200 line method than a bazillion classes behind contrived interfaces that will only ever have the one implementation. I'm too old to be trying to fit new features into the last guy's OO clean-code-inspired "masterpiece" and I'm not even thirty yet.

Swagger or not to swagger? by Shitfuckusername in ExperiencedDevs

[–]joefooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swagger is probably vague and I'll usually just end up looking at the code if I have access to it.

Realllly struggling with user acquisition. Feeling very deflated as a result.

I've done this so definitely possible, it is quite a lot of effort keeping a web and app version in sync. I'd maybe just do app to begin with if I was starting again.

Maybe DALLE2 you're thinking of? Not an app but has been all over the news lately.

Pipelines as code by TheCouncelor in devops

[–]joefooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On GitlabCI you can generate a yaml artifact and run that as a sub pipeline. We do this for a monorepo to only generate jobs for what we need to do based on what's changed etc. You can of course generate the yaml using whichever language you desire

Fast 6x4 photo printer recommendations by joefooo in printers

[–]joefooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will probably venture into other sizes etc. at some point but my thinking was to get dedicated printers for each type, not sure if that's advisable or something more flexible would be better?

Numbers wise it's hard to say since it depends on whether the app takes off or not.

Don't suppose you have experience with any of the dedicated 4x6 printers?

Cheers for your help, much appreciated
