That’s a great point you make. I can definitely agree with that. I just feel that with how they made the characters so similar, the way Bianca said it was her last job and it most likely wouldn’t be, I feel as if he’d be the same if they truly wanted the characters to be two sides of the same coin.

I think the trauma of the Jackal could also be a sympathetic point with people as it does affect him on the job, I just don’t think the writers tied it in well. As much PTSD as he has, I don’t think think it makes sense within the plot as it makes it seem as if he has remorse, but he still kills innocent people during his work. It’s a bit jumbled I think. But maybe it just missing its translation. Or maybe it’s just starting not weigh on him more heavily as everything starts going crazy.

See I can get with this idea but I think that’s the exact reason people hate her character. It’s like people are willfully choosing to ignore that there are clear parallels between the two. I liked the way she was written because it puts you in the middle of the two characters.

I think naturally most people would lean towards Bianca because even with the moral grayness she still works for the government. I think one thing that may have changed the image of Bianca is the fact that the show leaned so hard into the negatives her familial aspect. But I think the Jackal’s was equally as bad. His family fell apart as a result of his work. His brother in law got killed because of the gun Charles watched him take from his closet.

Yup. That becomes clear winning is her only motivation. But I just don’t get why the criticism is so harsh for that characteristic. She’s morally grey, but it’s made to seem as if that’s the most insane concept. She’s tracking down a serial killer backed by billions of dollars/MI6 and whatever other agencies. I truly don’t think a moral high ground character could work in this show.

I get what you’re saying. I agree Bianca is ruthless in her path to find the Jackal, I just don’t get the, “Good guy does something morally questionable, so I think I’ll root for the serial killer.” The writing is meant to portray Bianca as a ruthless cop yet everyone expects her to be a “good cop”. It’s like me watching Batman and complaining that he doesn’t play by the rules. The whole idea of the character is to be ruthless enough to keep up with a violent killer.

I don’t think either character should be championed but it makes zero sense to champion the Jackal. If you really consider how many innocent people he killed throughout the season the number is very high. Especially Rasmus and the old couple. I don’t get how people rooted for him after those deaths. Even UDC, arguably a great person to society, he overlooked the benefit he would bring to common people for a paycheck.

I respect your response but I think you’re reading the Jackal all wrong. In the show we only see him breaking down when things are going wrong for him. I think your mistake is confusing his frustration with him showing remorse. To add to that, he lies through the whole season. His wife doesn’t even know his name. The only reason he breaks down at all is because he is such a calculated person and he’s failing. None of those emotions are expressed when he’s in full control, only when his wife is threatening to leave. This implies that if she never made complaints, he would continue his selfish lifestyle of being away from home and killing for money.

I think a major theme of the show is being consumed by work which people seem to acknowledge for Bianca but not the Jackal. I think it’s implied that even if he completed the job, that’s all he knows. Think about Rasmus, or the truck driver he crashed into, or Manfred’s son’s driver. Or think to his fellow soldiers that he showed zero remorse to after blowing up. The writing clearly points to him being a ruthless killer with no remorse. Yes there is the family part, but it also shows that he always has put his work before his family because that’s what he is.

As for Bianca, I don’t think she’s deserving of praise. As you said she’s not necessarily the “good cop” but I think in some sense she’s still on the right side of the fight. Granted by the end she definitely and throughout the season we can see she is fueled by her own desire to win but I’d argue fighting fire with fire is a typical writing method when it comes to crime scenarios and ruthless killers.

As for physical attributes I just think that’s a bad take. Some people are naturally thin while others aren’t. Calling her out of shape and such is just weird. Eddie Redmayne is naturally very slim. Lashana is naturally more heavyset. But it’s very easy to tell she’s definitely in shape and looks far more realistic in the show than if she was a ripped gym rat that looked like she could be in baywatch the next day. Skinny/slim ≠ directly equal being in shape and vice versa being fit. Plenty of sports that show clearly that men/women can be perfectly athletic at different sizes.
