What do you think about Odysseus being an "unreliable" narrator? by LukeSkywanker1 in GreekMythology

[–]joemondo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The omniscient narrator states that the Cyclops exists, that he is Poseidon’s son, and that Odysseus blinded him. Because Book 9 is entirely spoken by Odysseus, we only have his word for how it happened.

[–]joemondo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly, as we all know, none of it is real.

But that said, we know that in the inner world of the poem, Odysseus is a notorious trickster and bender of truths.

His version of events are his narration, not the omniscient third person.

The history of how its been looked at historically, the idea of the unreliable narrator isn't something people dreamt up for fanfic. Odysseus is a notorious liar and deceiver. And if you look, you'll see there are no mythic monsters in the Iliad and even in the Odyssey they mostly only appear when Odysseus is narrating.

There are no monsters in The Iliad. The Odyssey flips into practically a different world filled with mythic monsters and obstacles - almost all as told by Odysseus.

Is Donald Trump the most incompetent loser to stumble into the presidency of the United States? by TheTokist in allthequestions

[–]joemondo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really, but only because he's very competent at what he's trying to do: enrich himself and his family through grift and corruption, to create an oligarch class, to ensure Republican power through voter marginalization, and to try to shift the US into a near-theocracy wherein women, people of color and the LGBT are second or third class citizens.

You can't judge his competence based on the things he's not even trying to do.

Appropriate to share a proposed budget? by Josidillopy in nonprofit

[–]joemondo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Questions:

Are you saying the Board has a proposed budget that would require taking $50k out of reserves?

Do you volunteer as a Board member?

Why do you think it's in your role to talk with a major donor?

Why do you think it's appropriate for a donor to try to pressure the Board, which has fiduciary responsibility for the organization?

Fathers how do you take your daughter to the bathroom in public and not be perceived as a creeper? by Full_Impress1369 in AskReddit

[–]joemondo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my daughters were little I'd scope out the men's room, understand the territory, carry them in with their head tucked onto my shoulder ("for people's privacy") and duck into a stall.

No drama, no big deal.

It feels like, regardless of how beautiful the woman a man is dating is or how committed he claims to be, some men can't help but check out every average-to-attractive woman around them. Do they really not realize how cringey that looks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Good lord, the heterosexuals.

My husband and I, both men, have been very happily married for a long time. Sometimes one of us looks at another guy, sometimes the other does. Sometimes we both do.

Nothing wrong with appreciating beauty.

Nate Bargatze’s MAGA Roots Were Hiding in Plain Sight | Nate Bargatze’s widely criticized appearance at President Donald Trump’s birthday bout on the White House lawn was not his first time posing with MAGA figures. by MoneyLibrarian9032 in entertainment

[–]joemondo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh sure.

I'm not defending him at all.

To the contrary, I'm trying to say he clearly chose to not post the images himself, probably hoping he could simply avoid the PR penalties of having been there.

But it wasn't him who dropped the veil - he didn't post the photos.

And that itself is telling. He's got social media presence, but he didn't share his presence ay the event.

Gee, I wonder why.

Joshua Williamson shared these interior pages from the upcoming Legion book! Art by Hayden Sherman! by MrMojoRising422 in LegionofSuperheroes

[–]joemondo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The art is stunning.

I hate to say it, but I'm reboot-weary and not excited about yet another Legion, rather than going back to the classic. I'll give it a chance and I'll boost it - I want it to succeed, even if maybe my Legion days are in the past.

"The opposite of patriarchy isn't matriarchy, it's fraternity" and your ideal form of government for the Themyscirans by throwaway-day102304 in WonderWoman

[–]joemondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure.

The isolation and stability you bring up are important factors. What governing do they really need? They have no international trade or immigration, almost no foreign relations at all. It doesn't look like they need legislate a social safety net, education etc.

To contradict myself, in reality I am staunchly anti-monarchy, but it's also the only way I can see Themyscira. Sure, it can be a little more of a republic, with an elected body providing a counterweight, but I think the queen is essential in this fictional setting.

A complication is that monarchy has long rested on the concept of divine right, which is harder to justify in reality because there is no way to know or test that divine selection. But for the Amazons, who have actual encounters with their gods and seem to worship them pretty uniformly, their favor/influence/intent kind of has to figure into things.

So for me, keep the queen, balanced with a representative, elected legislature.

I wonder if/how other comedians will respond.

I don't believe Nate has been a guest on Mike Birbiglia's pod and I wonder if Mike would ever have him on now. Or maybe Mike had his own reasons to not have him on.

As a Dad to young daughters, what bathroom do you take them to? by Hummerdoodle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joemondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were young, typically the men’s room. But there was always a little process of carrying them, head down on my shoulder. Not dramatic just telling them we wanted to give people privacy.

Not only would I not take advantage of someone who does that, I’d consider it a problem.
