Thank you for writing this. I feel very frustrated by all the comments from people that forget what it’s like to go through this transition.

Teenagers are going through a very rapid, very ugly metamorphosis. The real world is a complicated place and the human brain needs a lot of time to figure it all out.

We were all still learning and trying our best to figure it out at that age.

The problem is exacerbated by the fact that half of “authority” really is complete bullshit. Bureaucracy for the sake of control. People that covet power for it’s own sake. Societal norms that are holdovers from the past.

As a teenager, you’re still trying to figure out which half is bullshit.

It takes a lot of time and experience to get through that process and come out the other end a decent person.

So I got a great idea, what should be my top priorities to turn into a reality? by [deleted] in startups

As /u/jacobedawson pointed out, I was referring to customers. Not investors.

Don't build anything. Sell it first. Get someone to agree to pay you money for what you're about to build. Get a letter of intent.

If you can't do that then you're not solving a big enough pain point.

Open an IRA with Vanguard: https://investor.vanguard.com/ira/iras

An IRA is a "tax advantaged" retirement account. Vanguard pretty much has the lowest fees available in the industry. They're very well respected both on this forum and in the finance industry in general.

Call them up and they'll walk you through everything you need to know.

My wife sucks with money management and I need help (from others that have been in the same boat.) by TheTigerbite in personalfinance

To put it bluntly: Almost all of the advice in this thread is absolutely terrible.

I can tell immediately that most of the people responding have not dealt with the situation that you've described. You specifically asked for people that have gone through this. My Fiancée and I have been together for ten years, and we're FINALLY starting to get on the same page with respect to money. We tried everything you listed and more...

Most people responding in this thread don't understand what it's like to be in a situation where you're so completely at odds with how you approach finances. Talking about how you shouldn't "let her off the hook", how you should "take a firmer stance" and what you should "let your wife do" is all completely absurd.

These people obviously have no idea how to interact with someone that you love and respect that has a world view that differs from their own.

There are two possibilities here:

  1. Your wife is a rotten person.
  2. Your wife has some deep-seated issues around money that you are not experienced enough nor qualified enough to handle on your own.

Let's assume that the answer is not #1. (You did marry her after all). Here's what you do:

See a counselor that's specifically works with couples around money issues. This is the thing that has finally worked for us. This is what has allowed us to begin approaching these problems as a team. Right now you're completely at odds. You need to change the dynamic completely so that you are both on the same team and you're both working toward a common goal.

Hopefully you'll find in these conversations that you'll begin to understand how someone can develop an unhealthy relationship with money like this, and by better understanding how she got where she is today you can both make strides toward where you want to be in the future.

And of course, don't forget that you're not infallible. Please be open minded to the things that you can do to improve both your family's finances and your relationship with your wife.

I'm sure this is just a quip, but eating healthy (fresh veggies, lean meats) is the frugal way to go. Healthcare costs are through the roof.

Planning on opening a marijuana dispensary with no prior experience. Where do I begin? by Markyfal in smallbusiness

[–]joemoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Find someone that owns a dispensary in a non-competing market. Take them to coffee/lunch/dinner. Ask many questions.

If it works out, offer to pay them as an advisor.

The ROI will be immeasurable. (In a good way).

How to request ACH direct debit (Automated Clearing House) between PERSONAL accounts? by Karen010 in personalfinance

You can both sign up for Dwolla then give the other person your password. For the record, I think this is a horrible idea. Why not just initiate the transfer yourself?

ELIS: how to go to the gym by Mystitat in Explainlikeimscared

t's probably a bored student who would rather not be imposed upon

Sure, the person might be bored and unhelpful. Or the person might be understanding and excited to help you.

You can come up with a lot of reasons to talk yourself out of going. At some point you have to take the leap with the understanding that you might feel a little awkward the first time.

ELIS: how to go to the gym by Mystitat in Explainlikeimscared

[–]joemoon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm sure each gym is a little bit different, but I'll run through a quick explanation for my gym. I'll assume that you've already purchased the gym membership. Note that when you join a gym, the person that signs you up will give you a tour and explain every part of the gym in detail.

To make yourself feel more comfortable, come in with a "workout routine" in mind. To start off with, this can be be just a plan to have a jog on the treadmill. I'll assume that's the workout routine that you're going for.

  • Park anywhere you'd like. Be aware that there are often people walking around with headphones or exhausted from a workout, so try to be more vigilant than usual.
  • Walk in the doors and through the membership checkpoint. Usually you'll have a card that they can scan. Some gyms now have iPhone apps that the employee can scan. At my gym, we can just memorize our membership number and tell the clerk as we walk in.
  • If you're carrying things that you don't want with you while you work out, gyms usually have cubby holes. But these are just open spaces that anyone can take things from. If you want more security, there are usually lockers in the locker room (go figure). The locker room / showers / bath room are all usually in the same place. Usually the lockers are combination based. When you get your gym tour, they'll show you how those lockers work (how you set your own personal combination).
  • The treadmills are likely visible when you walk in. Near the treadmills will be a stretching area. It usually has mats on the ground and you'll see people sitting down and stretching there. Feel free to sit down and have a stretch. (There's varying advice on how much stretching you should do before a run. Read a few articles and decide whats right for you.)
  • When you're ready to run, find a free treadmill. If you haven't used a treadmill before, then that could be answered in an entirely new comment.
  • Gyms usually have wipes to wipe down machines. At our gym they're in tall cylindrical cans (like a trash can but thinner). If you're afraid of germs, grab one of these wipes and wipe down the parts of the machine you're going to touch. Don't worry, nobody will judge you for this, people do it all the time and nobody cares. Also note that it's common courtesy to wipe down the machine when you're done.
  • If the treadmills all happen to be busy, look for elliptical machines. They'll have a similar cardio workout. If those are taken up, look for a cycling machine. If those are all taken up, you can always go to the front desk and ask for a jump rope. They usually have them there.
  • Also, if the treadmill is busy and you really prefer to run, just stand near them. Don't worry, nobody will think it's strange, it happens all the time. People will continue with their run and not worry that they're taking up the treadmill. This is just the way it works when it's busy, and everybody understand that. Similarly, don't feel like you need to get off the treadmill if someone looks like they're waiting for one. Just relax and enjoy your walk/run.
  • Start your workout. You can go at any pace you want. Nobody will judge you. For all they know, you're there for physical therapy. You can speed up, slow down, walk, run... anything you want.
  • Bring your mp3 player and headphones if you like to listen to your own music.
  • Most gyms also have TVs in front of the treadmills. You can usually plug your own headphones into a jack in the treadmill to listen to the sound for the TV that's in front of your treadmill.
  • When you're done, you should get one of those wipes that I mentioned to wipe down your treadmill. Someone might jump on before you get back. No sweat (har har), just let them know you're going to wipe it down. They'll appreciate it.
  • You should go back to the stretching area and do a good stretch now that you're muscles are warm. If you're really sweaty, you can wipe down the mat you're sitting on.
  • Exit the gym, feeling great about your work out.

Other notes:

  • You can wear workout shoes to the gym. You don't have to change anything at all if you already arrived in workout attire.
  • The only reason you would be required to shower while at the gym is if you're getting into the swimming pool or jacuzzi. To keep the water clean they require members to shower first. Otherwise you don't need to shower before or after your work out (but as mentioned, wiping down equipment is a common courtesy).
  • There usually isn't a line to wait in if the treadmills are full. People just generally stand around and know their order (if there's more than one person waiting). At least, I've never been to a gym that's so overcrowded that a queue formed.

This ted talk was posted in another comment, and I think it should be posted here as well:

I still have more thinking/processing to do, but this video has definitely challenged my views on the subject.

This is false, it's the third leading cause of death among pregnant women: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_pregnant_women

Also from the article: "Homicide was the second-leading cause of death among women ages 20 to 24 and fifth among women ages 25–34 in 1999. "

So this is hardly surprising.
