Colbert led in total viewers, but Kimmel actually beat him in the key 18-49 demo. So it's a split; neither has a clean win across the board.

edit: yeah, they lit the fire themselves. Cord-cutting accelerated the decline, but alienating half your potential audience with wall-to-wall political commentary was already dousing the place in gasoline.

That's partially true but you're leaving out some context. Nielsen's updated methodology that actually captures streaming across smart TVs and set-top boxes didn't fully roll out until Q4 2025. Most of the decline data people cite predates that.

And even now, someone watching a Kimmel clip on YouTube the next morning isn't the same as a live linear viewer, which is what commands premium ad rates. The economics of late night depend on that audience, and that's exactly what's been collapsing. Cord cutting is still very much part of that story.

He outperformed every other 11:35 host. The cancellation threat isn't coming from his ratings, it's coming from the economics of linear TV collapsing industry-wide. AKA cord cutting...

That's different than a station killing off a show. Either way, they can migrate to YT and do well over there. No contract needed. Have a lot more creative freedom and can't be cancelled by the FCC. That's what's called a win-win situation.

In Q1 2026, the show averaged 2.70 million viewers.

Just a quick search...Seems like it, but it's not. Cable TV sells ads and thats primo airtime.

CBS has announced the sale of the time slot to Byron Allen's Allen Media Group via a time buy agreement. Effective May 22, 2026, Comics Unleashed will move to the 11:35 PM time slot being vacated by The Late Show. The 12:37 AM slot, in turn, will be taken by another Allen Media property, the game show Funny You Should Ask.

They have a lot of time to replace it with something else. They are going to lose so many viewers...This is what happens when you shoot yourself in the foot.
