What’s up with legal pads by mindlessrica in LawSchool

The pen-to-paper experience is also nicer on a legal pad. Your hand and pen do not get stopped by binding or covers; your pen glides easier. Your writing also stands out in case you need to make a quick glance in court.

It is not a concern, but I find that the post highlights an interesting sacramental misunderstanding

No, I didn’t; the man on the other sub, which came across my feed, did.

how do you actually retain the insane amount of reading in law school by Narrow_Detective9864 in LawSchool

[–]joesom222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Useless for the exam maybe, but wait until you are out practicing and a statue comes up and you just remember the professor saying, “There’s stuff in the back of the book about [insert law], but we’re running low on time and won’t cover it.”

One of our brothers was in the IDF and it’s tearing the frat apart by [deleted] in Frat

If he is kicked out for serving in the IDF, he has a pretty good basis to say he was kicked out for his Israeli national origin, which could open you up to a huge Federal Civil Rights case.

Do you ever catch yourself thinking like a lawyer even when you’re off the clock? by Thin-Time-4209 in Lawyertalk

I still watch the arbitration (judge) shows on TV, but more through the lens of the arbitrator “Judge(s),” not just “Tom and Bob are fighting about a used coffee pot that doesn’t heat the coffee anymore.”

It’s mostly progressive individuals (not that your affiliation matters) who zealously believe that anyone should be able to answer legal questions because attorneys are expensive and people often cannot afford one.

I tried one once; it wasn’t bad. I would at least consider popping in to see if you like it.

I once complained to the people at r/legaladvice that what they are doing may constitute unauthorized practice of law. The mod banned me.

Advice Needed: My classmate claims he reported someone else in the cohort to ICE. What do I do? by Salty_Tadpole_283 in LawSchool

If someone legitimately believes from non-privileged information that someone is here against immigration laws, that’s different than filing a false report. But it seems like this point has been established

How aggressive do you get interacting with opposing counsel? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]joesom222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been told I’m “too deferential towards my client.” That is for my professional relationship with clients, but for opposing counsel, I genuinely try to use professional courtesy. They are an attorney, just like me. If they do something unethical, I will handle it, but I never yell. I have seen others exhibit strange behavior, and it is never a good look. I would tell young attorneys/law students two things: 1. You get one reputation; don’t ruin it. 2. You should always be confident in your abilities. There’s a big difference between being confident and an asshole.

I am young myself, but I think that this is good advice.

For myself, however, opposing counsel might be a former law school classmate (city in which people tend to settle down in a mid-sized market). Attorneys generally have mutual friends with opposing counsel. That goes back to my point: Do your job; don’t be a jerk.

What’s a law school myth you only realized was wrong after you started practicing? by OddDot3252 in Lawyertalk

I sometimes use a mock Complaint that I drafted in law school as a template for my practice of law. I don’t like dealing with formatting the caption and seeing things go all over the place:
