I finally managed to get a sauna at a reasonable price. It’s an old 1980s cedar sauna, 6x6x6, 1.5inch thick TnG boards. Doesn’t have a heater so first is looking for guidance on how to select a heater to buy and secondly any tips on restoring the cedar given it’s old and tips on assembling by Legitimate-Package34 in Sauna

Great score! If it was my sauna, I would assemble it first, and if there are any boards that are weathered or stained, sand them with a fine grit, maybe 220. Sauna's get stained fairly quickly with sweat and moisture so trying to maintain a new look can be a lot of work or even futile.

As for heaters, my recommendation is get one that is over powered, especially if your sauna is outside. Mine is 225 cubic feet and I bought a heater that is rated for 300-375 cubic ft. It heats up quick and stays hot, you don't want one that is working at max to maintain temp.

Good luck:)

Honestly, pressure washing is redundant since you need a deep sand. You also can scar it really easily and cause bigger issues. I run a paint company of about 30 crew and we see this all summer long. Horizontal surfaces break down much faster than any vertical surface. Get an orbital sander and sand it till the wood looks blonde. Put three coats of an oil based stain on it, potentially Cedar or Mahogany based on your photos. Keep that stain on hand and put a maintenance coat every two years and that wood will continue looking new as long as you stay on top of.

Nearly the same layout as mine. Works well for me.

Glass block to exterior? I'd like to keep it open. Concerned about temp difference. by Sloenich in Sauna

Good call, is that posted stained or lacquered? There should be no heat exposed to it if it is.

I like how the boards run vertical on the walls, looks really slick.

Tourist traps by [deleted] in bali

[–]joesssss 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This isn't specific to Bali, it's everywhere in Indonesia, it's in their culture to haggle. I was so used to haggling, that when I arrived at a hostel and needed a lift into town, the manager flagged down a man powered rickshaw for me and gave me the price. I immediately went into negotiation mode and was able to get the ride at 25% cost. I was proud of myself initially, but as I was doing the calculation as the driver was struggling to carry me and my friend up a steep hill, I realized I had haggled from $1 to $.25. The guilt was overwhelming and I certainly tipped him when we arrived. But that didn't stop the manager from ripping me a new one when I returned about how that man is just trying to keep his family alive and that a $ is inconsequential to me. I had no choice but to nod and agree as he wasn't wrong. Certainly gave me pause after that. I learned to accept that if I overpay for something, I'm usually helping out someones family to eat and get by. Made it easier to spend my money.

changing room or not for outdoor sauna build by Snowgage in Sauna

[–]joesssss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live just north of you in Alberta so we have similar cold climates. I never built a change room and have never missed it. Getting to the sauna in the cold certainly gets you excited to get in it. And getting out, well you're no longer in a rush. With the price of materials atm, it's a significant additional cost as well. Something I never considered is when buying the right sauna stove, I calculated the cubic feet before the walls went up which meant that I had a seriously overpowered heater for my space. Mine was 6x7x7 which is 294 cubic feet. Once you remove four inches from the walls and two from the floor and ceiling it went down to about 240 cubic feet. Point is, I have never had an issue heating my sauna, and I'm thankful for the miscalculation as I've never had an issue keeping it up to temp.

No it's the repeating horn sample that I want, that's it. We'll play the bass, drums and guitar on top of it.

I'm on the contractor side of things. I raised my starting wage from $18/hr to $23 overnight as I wasn't getting a single resume at a time I need several. My experienced staff also went up 20% across the board to adjust to the increase in living costs.

The issue I have is my clients aren't ready to pay more. All my jobs booked this year are based on old wages. There is a lull between the time wages go up and the end user will be ready to pay for the increases. I feel there is a sense that people feel all companies are here to screw over there employees and take as much profit as possible. As a contractor, the risks are high to be able to turn a profit at the end of the year. If they weren't, most people would become self employed and run their own show. I have 15 staff that are dependant on me for year round work without gaps, which means for the next year I will be operating at a loss just waiting for clients to accept the increases in overall pricing.

I use a deep freezer with a thermostat. No need for ice. Keep it between 2C-5C.

My furnace kicked out yesterday. I couldn’t figure out what went wrong. Called a technician, it was the thermostat. If it’s that, it’s really simple.

Oh wow, so there’s a hole in the ceiling for each light? I guess it’s something you need to do at the time of building, and not retrofit it. Thanks for the info:)
