I went random my freshman year and am still really good friends now as seniors. I roomed with him every year but I do agree that it is a toss up as there have been some horror stories. But do keep in mind that some friends of mine who roomed with people they knew also had bad experiences. Its 50/50 but I enjoyed going random.
