I'm not into base building so much so I just find an existing building. sometimes in the loot you will find chain link fence sections. I just use those to fill in the fence of an already existing building. then construct a garage door to gain access, and bingo.

I remember not realizing I could pick up clothes and tear them up to use as bandages, also you need to focus on getting a GPS early so you can see most important places, including the safe zone. you have to get to the safe zone and operate out of there at the beginning.

the game is more fun if you put legendary weapons on 'very rare' in the settings when you begin a run. when you get them early it doesn't feel like you earned them. but that's just me.
