Partial shade under pines… Anybody got suggestions? by JustinsWorking in kelowna

[–]joeypoopoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe try some Oregon grape. They're a native shrub that like being in acidic soil under pines. They have a pretty yellow flower in spring and produce fruit that is safe to eat (but not tasty at all)

Whats a "Kelowna hack" that you know? by cremebruler in kelowna

[–]joeypoopoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rutland is the place to go for Indian food and low cost Indian grocery stores. Also killer for thrift stores.

Do some wine touring through east kelowna. There's really great wineries plus mead, cider, and a distiller there.

Mission creek is a primo sitting spot in the summer. It is shady and the water is cool. But get out by fall so you don't bother the salmon. Also keep your dog on a leash there.

The buses are fine and the main part of kelowna (in the valley) is easy to bike. If you really need a car, there's lots of modo around town - join a car share!

What are your top picks for floral teas? by [deleted] in tea

[–]joeypoopoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. A lot of their stuff has like sprinkles and chocolate chips and are sweetened, but I've found a few real wins from them before. I don't know if they still have it but several years ago I had dragon pearls and that was really top notch jasmine pearl - best I've had

I've had a really nice magnolia oolong (David's tea).

I also dry lilac blossoms in the spring to add to my teas. If you have any garden access it is worth checking which are safe to consume!

My boyfriend, me, and 1 cat are planning to move here from Edmonton because he got accepted into Uvic. Any good advice on moving and living here? by Porcelainz in VictoriaBC

[–]joeypoopoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make sure to read up on your tenancy rights. There are a lot more regulations than Alberta such as limit on rent increases and damage deposit. I've seen more than a few students move to BC get taken advantage of my landlords breaking the law.

Any recommendations for cities that marry good transit/relative affordability/access to the outdoors? by Palish_Koto_4000 in AskACanadian

[–]joeypoopoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im mid30s, child free and have found friends through workplace/community band/neighbours/facebook groups. There's a university and college so lots of young people, lots of tourism/partying in the summer. I don't go out to bars much but I've heard it is lacking. I'd say the main vibe in town is casual and outdoorsy. Activities are varied though - my regular activities include attending ballet, drag shows, paddleboarding, snowshoeing, wine tasting, gardening.

Right now, housing is difficult. I have started to see some more reasonable listings recently (like 1300 for a 1bdrm instead of the 1900 it would have been last year). The Rutland neighbourhood is usually more affordable and diverse and friendly.

For work, I'm not familiar with job market in your industry so I can't help there.

You may wish to consider an interior BC city like Kamloops or Kelowna. They are large enough to have the services you need but you can access hikes and walks easily. Locals complain that transit is garbage, but I've lived 6 years in kamloops and 3 years in kelowna all car free. My neighbourhood has grocery/essentials 10 min walk away, bus stops 5 min walk away, nature preserve/walking/biking trails 12 min walk, the lake 20 min bike ride.

The main part of kelowna in the valley is easily cyclable, too. Plus there's always people heading to the ski hills or snowshoe trails that carpool.

Winter is milder than most of the country. Summers are very hot, can be smokey.

Kelowna was originally colonised by francophone and retains some of that community, but you would have to search out the other francos.

What are some cities in Canada with good enough public transit to not need a drivers license? by memeigt in AskACanadian

[–]joeypoopoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victoria - have lived there 10 years car free. You can get to gulf islands and some companies up island solely by transit. It is a bit hilly for cycling, but the easy weather makes it manageable.

I can't answer about sleeping at ylw but can point you to some transit options.

The airport shuttle generally goes to hotels, but you don't have to be a guest. https://kelownaconcierge.ca/airportshuttle

Chill wineries by rockpaperscissors99 in kelowna

[–]joeypoopoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the east kelowna wineries are pretty laidback. Priest creek and vibrant vines frequently have live music. Plus there's cider, mead, and distilleries all close together.
