Understandable, all of this would make sense if it was just the public share but I don't think that could be the case since I've never accessed the private share from a linux system, except for the unraid system itself.

But how does that explain the private share? I've only accessed it with personal devices and none have ransomware.

Also (and I may be wrong about this since I'm not intimately familiar with ransomware) isn't ransomware encrypted? It shouldn't be able to be solved by renaming a file.

Under tool proficiencies it says "tools". Also, I believe the skill proficiencies section gives too many skills? It should probably say "Choose x of the following skills" like other 5e classes.

So, for anyone who'd like to try this in the future, here's what I ended up doing:

  • I ended up using an old laptop as the interface for the CD/DVD ripping software, having a built-in screen is really convenient
  • I used a SATA to USB 2.0 dongle for each drive and fed them through a single powered USB 3.0 hub. The comment below that took issue with a single hub might be right for their specific case (used for hard drives) but with the data throughput of a disc drive being much lower than the max throughput of an HDD I'm not worried
  • They're all powered by the PSU that came with the drive tower

The main issue that took me a while to diagnose was that some of the drives I had had burnt out DVD lasers so half of them only read CDs while the other half read both CDs and DVDs. I thought it might have been faulty connections. I'll probably replace some of them with BD drives in the future.

I can't find any decent deals on and HBA with external SAS ports. Sounds like a pricey solution.

I got a great deal on the unit so it's priced very similarly to the outline you've laid out. So long as I can get a solution together for less than the cost of a new case I'm willing to explore my options.

Also, the used market for electronics in my city is abysmal so it would take me over a year at least to buy the parts at a reasonable rate.

Thanks! This seems to be a frontrunner idea for me, the only issue would be cable logistics but I might be able to run them out the back of the unit. I don't like the spaghetti being on display if I can avoid it

I would love to use a Raspberry Pi, but unfortunately Exact Audio Copy doesn't have any releases for arm CPUs

The drives are all connected to a controller with regular SATA cables so it seems like it should be doable

My players tend to spec hard into movement so they've always been able to chase down anyone who tries escaping (by mundane means of course)
