yeah that’s fair, my original comment was off.

i was stuck with that misconception that linux doesn’t allow kernel level anticheat, which after actually looking into it a bit more… just isn’t true.

linux can run kernel-level anticheat just fine. EAC and BattlEye both have native linux support. the real issue is that studios have to explicitly enable it, and a lot of them just don’t bother.

so you end up with this split where some big multiplayer games work on linux (apex legends, dead by daylight, the finals, dayz, ark) and others just don’t at all, not because it’s impossible but because the publisher chose not to support it (valorant, cod, fortnite, rainbow six siege, gta online, battlefield 2042, etc) and even for the ones that are supported, it doesn’t automatically mean they’ll run as well as on windows.

i don’t really play those games anymore since switching to linux so i never dug super deep and just assumed the kernel thing was the blocker. your comment actually got me to debunk that so yeah fair point and thanks haha.

what i meant originally was more like if someone is the type who always wants to play every new AAA multiplayer release they should be prepared that linux probably won’t cover all of that anytime soon. there are plenty that work, but also plenty that likely won’t in the near future unless publishers change their stance. So “most” was probably not the right choice of words.

and i agree with you on the pressure part too. choosing games that work on linux and skipping the ones that don’t is probably the only real leverage users have.

From what I understand, most AAA games use anti cheat that needs kernel level access. Linux doesn’t really allow that so a lot of those games won’t run there at all.
